UFC 102 Far From Sold Out; Economy, Taxes Problematic
August 18, 2009

A story that’s seemingly flown right under the radar the last couple weeks is the fact that the UFC is having trouble selling tickets for its 102 event to be held at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. The venue holds nearly 20,000 people for an MMA event, but has sold just over 9,000 tickets to date.

It’s surprising news for a number of reasons: Randy Couture is an Oregon boy, MMA is fairly popular in the state, and the UFC has built up a tremendous amount of momentum in recent months. When you look deeper, however, it’s not so surprising at all that UFC 102 is struggling to fill its arena.

The UFC was actually slated to bring their show to Portland back in November of 2008, but it is believed that the organization cancelled those plans and chose Las Vegas instead due to a combination of the poor economy in Oregon and exhoribidant event taxation in Portland.

Fast forward to 2009 and the economy is only getting worse:

Oregon’s economy, bad as it is, will get even worse over the coming months, threatening double-digit unemployment and early school closures while sucking billions of dollars from the state budget, according to a forecast released Friday.

“We’re falling basically into a pit,” said state economist Tom Potiowsky. He had the unenviable job of telling stone-faced state officials how much — or how little — they can spend on education, aid to the poor and other programs.

According to Potiowsky’s forecast, which is used to set state spending levels, the current state budget will come up short by $855 million. For the 2009-11 budget, the gap between projected revenue and the rising cost of state services grows to $3 billion.

The sharp drop stems from the same forces that clobbered the nation’s economy: dried-up export markets, tumbling home values, falling stock prices and frightened consumers.

“The perfect storm is here,” Potiowsky said. “And Oregon is feeling the recession stronger than many other states.” He predicted

Exacerbating the problem even further are the 6% gross receipt taxes levied by both the Oregon State Athletic Commission and the City of Portland for MMA events held in the city - ie., 12%.

Brad Darcy, the Executive Director of the Oregon State Athletic Commission captures the heart of the issue:

“It’s an obstacle, I’m afraid,” Darcy said. “There is a six percent tax on gross receipts of live events to the commission. And on top of that, there’s a city tax of six percent. We rank pretty high (nationally) in terms of our level of taxation.”

In order to maintain their bottom line the UFC has subsequently priced tickets for 102 at the $600, $400, $300, $200, $100, and $50 levels, which has obviously left some UFC fans quite reluctant to pony up their hard earned cash in a very drab-looking economy. A telling indication of over-pricing on the UFC’s part is the near sell-out at the lower ticket ranges while the higher priced tickets still remain available in great quantities.

Payout Perspective:

Ticket pricing is a complex science designed to help firms maximize their revenue from any given event. I’d be curious to see if the UFC employs such a system when setting their prices. And, as it is a science, certain intangible variables such as the long-term benefit of a full house don’t always factor into the equation; it’s very much a short-term analysis.

Personally, I tend to take the long-term approach in thinking that an immediate sacrifice of revenue maximization at the event level is probably worth selling the tickets for less, filling the seats, maximizing sponsorship value, and reaping the benefits of an increased fan base in the future.

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

Any word on if the PPV will be blacked out if its not sold out at the RG?

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

Damn, tix for this is expensive. I'm sure people are more likely to just want to stay at home with friends, split the cost of the PPV and watch it, or just go to the bars. Bars are freakin' packed when they show UFC around here.

card looks weak.

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

I agree with most I wish prices were not so high to watch fights. I love the UFC but man they are taxed tickets, because on top of there high prices you get about $20 in ticket fees too. Oh well just watch on PPV like I do every other time.

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

Compared to tickets to the event I went too... this events tickets are cheaper.

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

Supposedly they are still having trouble selling out. You may be able to pick up reduced rate tickets in the coming days. Saturday night you might even get really cheap ones if they haven't sold them all.

I've never heard of them doing that before. Who's choice is it--the UFC or the PPV provider?

DESPITE SLOWER THAN NORMAL TICKET SALES, DANA WHITE CONSIDERS UFC 102 IN PORTLAND A SUCCESS

PORTLAND, Ore. – When tonight's "UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira" pay-per-view event begins, fans tuning in may notice something different than what they've witnessed in past broadcasts: empty seats.

As the UFC makes its first visit to the 20,000-seat Rose Garden in Portland, Ore., UFC president Dana White says he'll be "pumped" to sell 10,000 tickets for the event.

But with Portland's unemployment rate hovering around 12 percent, White said he would consider that number a success.

"Did we come in here and blow it out of the water and sell it out and everything?" White asked MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "No. But listen, in this economy right now, (if) we go in and we sell 10,000 tickets, I'm pumped. You know what I mean?

"There's baseball and basketball and all these other big, major sports right now that are hurting, and people aren't buying tickets, and people aren't spending money."

White, who on Thursday admitted this week was his first-ever trip to Oregon, said based on the struggling economy in the state he's satisfied with the current status of ticket sales to the event – even if they don't necessarily match-up with previous events.

"When we go into a market and people buy a good amount of tickets, I'm more than happy – and especially when we come up here into Oregon and everyone has felt this crunch," White said. "People are being laid-off, people don't have jobs. Believe me, I'm very happy with what we've done here in Portland."

White said while some venues experience record live gates when the UFC comes to town, the organization knows they can't guarantee that same success in every new market.

"There's other markets we go into and we're kind of – I was questionable in Philly," White said. "I was like, 'It will be interesting to see what we do in Philly.' We killed it in Philly, and it was great. The way I look at here, we killed it here, too."

White also said the current economy of the country will keep him from raising ticket and pay-per-view prices any time soon.

"Listen, I'm not living in a bubble, man," White said. "I know what's going on out there, and believe me, ask (UFC co-owner) Lorenzo (Fertitta) some time, I battle with our CFO. I battle with him. We're not raising prices. We're not raising pay-per-view prices. If anything, we go into certain markets, and we'll adjust to that market.

"UFC 100, did you see ticket prices go up for UFC 100? Nope. Didn't do it. We could have done it for 100. My answer is, 'No.' It won't happen. Not while I'm here. It's not going to happen."

While the organization will have to wait and see how Portland's walk-up crowd will affect final attendance numbers, the UFC's next pay-per-view is already guaranteed promising ticket revenue.

"Dallas (site of UFC 103 on Sept. 19) is going great," White said. "It's almost sold out. We get to a point where when you sell 'x' amount of tickets, it's considered a sell-out. You still have a certain amount of time, and then you have the walk-up. So, yeah, we consider Dallas a sell-out."

Like I said earlier, with so many unsold tickets, there is a good chance you can get some on the cheap tonight.

Re: The UFC is finally coming to Portland

Great show! The Northwestern natives had a tough go of it going 1-3 for the night, the lone winner being young lightweight Evan Dunham, but several memorable bouts and an epic main event made the event more than worthwhile.

Results:

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
def. Randy Couture by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Thiago Silva def. Keith Jardine by KO (Punch) at 1:35, R1

Nate Marquardt def. Demian Maia by KO at :21, R1
Brandon Vera def. Krzystztof Soszynski by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Gabriel Gonzaga def. Chris Tuchscherer by TKO (Strikes) at 2:27, R1

Evan Dunham def. Marcus Aurelio by Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

It was a great show! Loved every minute of it!

Overall Dana White is happy with the way things worked out. Attendance was above 16,000 and the crowd was loud and knowledgeable.

White wants to come back to Portland again but will put on shows in Seattle and Vancouver BC first.

Did you go see it?

Did anyone here?

Yeah I was there. It was awesome and the arena looked pretty damn full. It was loud as hell too especially during the Randy fight. The best was the 7 second record KO by Duffee haha.

Yeah I guess the fighters were impressed by the crowd noise. Portland got one of the best PPV's in recent memory.

:banghead: Damnit, I wish I could have been there....but it was just one of those months, budget wise.

Too bad Randy lost. I hate to say it, but the guy really should just pack it in.
