i just got their new album from a friend, and lately they have really grown on me, there is a couple of really great songs on the album, out of 10 i would rate it 7. i suggest you guys get out and get it in three or four days when it comes out in stores.

well why dont you give an explanaition, you cant just come into a thread and just state things that are completely false with no argument to try back them up. the fact that jack white is considered a top 20 guitarist of all time is one reason that makes them pretty great, and also they arent money chasing, consumerist, fukin losers like timberlake, man, why would you listen to timberlake, he sucks. do see what you sound like man? anyway timberlake actually does suck because all he is, is a ****** pop singer who is uncreative, uninspired and only motivated by money. he also cant dance even though he thinks he is better than michael jackson.

Yeah, I'm slightly offended, because I like their music. Not enough to get really uptight about it though.

I just think it's hypocritical to be into someone like Kanye West, who is a complete abomination to the concept of music, and yet say that the White Stripes suck.

Never did I put together that a musician has to be anti-consumerism and anti-celebrity to make good music. Oh, and BTW last I checked The White Stripes were seeling their new CD on a flash drive for 57 bucks. Yeah, that's not consumerist. Give me a break.

Let's see, I find him entertaining and he makes me dance and have a good time, so I listen to him. Since when is pop music the devil? Motivated by money? I could care less, he makes music that makes me happy and thus I continue to listen to it. It's not as if I listen to Timberlake as I would to someone like Pink Floyd or Merzbow. Pink Floyd/Merzbow and Timberlake/Kanye are two different fields of music, intended for different purposes. Don't get your panties in a knot when someone doesn't find some band you like interesting.

If you guys are afraid of opinions, don't post **** like this then. Someone like me might come along and tell you differently than what your opinion is on such a matter. It's PROPER MESSAGE BOARD PROCEDURE. You know, the sharing of opinions and discussions.

I appreciate what Jack White does some of the time, but most of the time it's just repetitive guitar riffs. Don't get me started on Meg. And don't tell me that's the intent of the band to have such a ****** drummer. If that was the case, Jack could create the same minuscule loop on a computer and play it over the speakers. Their debut and White Blood Cells was pretty entertaining but then once they found their hitmaking formula they just went that route, and it's seen on Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan as they are absolutely horrid.

I love the stuff Jack did with Loretta Lynn and the Raconteurs, but he should've abandoned the White Stripes long ago.

You made some valid points about the White Stripes, I just think that Fergie/Kanye and some of the other pop stars you've mentioned in the past suck as well (not all just most). I believe VC is upset because one can say popstars follow a hitmaking formula and have plenty of horrid songs that flood the radio.

What do your motivations for listening to the music have to do with anything? The point is that you said the White Stripes are "horrible," yet you're a fan of some of the worst music to come out of the modern pop era.

First of all, who is afraid of an opinion? You're putting words into my mouth. Second of all, usually people on message boards back up their opinions. They don't just enter a thread and say "the white stripes are horrible." It's usually more along the lines of "the white stripes are horrible, because ______."

Otherwise, that's just baiting.

He's written some great riffs, but is that a bad thing? Some of the greatest rock songs of all-time are so great because of their classic, often simple, guitar riffs. Still, I think you're oversimplifying Jack White's playing by labeling him that way.

Agreed, Meg White is horrible. But I don't think anyone ever said that it was their intent to have a bad drummer. That's just putting words into my (or AKIRA's) mouth again.

I get really conflicting vibes from you on the mainstream. On one hand, you take the attitude "hey, if it sounds good and I can dance to it, then it's a good song," and then on the other hand, you take the attitude "all hits are derived by the same homogenous formula and are unoriginal."

It's almost like you're being esoteric for the sake of being esoteric.

Agreed on that sentiment. I'm not sure why he went back to the White Stripes, when basically he had the ideal supporting cast with the Raconteurs.

And for the record, Kanye West is still the antichrist.

I enjoy specific songs more than I do their full albums. Like everyone has already said, their songs depend a lot on catchy guitar riffs, and if I don't really enjoy them than I start to notice the other flaws with the band (specifically the crappy drumming). I respect White's creativity, though.

I really never liked a whole lot of The White Stripes stuff, but did like The Racounteers from what I heard of them. However, I actually do kind of like the new White Stripes song, but I'm not sure if I like it enough to buy the CD.

Yeah, he might be, but only of the mainstream music scene. I can name dozens of guitarists more innovative than Jack White, that are still alive. That's the problem with music publications, they only report on what's "hot." They don't report on anything new and oustounding, on artists and bands that are pushing the boundaries of music every single day. It's not interesting.

They're horrible for what they are hailed to be. Kanye West and Justin Timberlake aren't hailed by magazines and other media outlets the best thing since sliced bread. Hell, no one can apply the best of anything to a pop musician. That's just ridiculous.

They're horrible because technically their music is washed down, and repeated over and over again. Monotonous guitar riffs and drum patterns are very evident in their music. Hell, it's their signature sound. You should know this, I believe you play the guitar.

That's because, as I said earlier, I don't treat Justin Timberlake and The White Stripes in the same manner. Justin doesn't play any instruments (aside from the occasional piano) and probably doesn't write his own music/lyrics. The White Stripes do, and that puts them on a whole 'nother level. They're thought of as innovators then, and if they don't innovate, they don't hold my interest and I label them as hacks. I look deeper (or did) into The White Stripes music than I would into Justin Timberlake's. They're used for different purposes.

But, that's all they are...popstars. I don't expect anything else from them. I dance, and I'm done. It's not as if Rolling Stone is out writing articles about how Fergie's latest album is amazing and how if you're not her, you're not anything...as they are doing with the White Stripes. That attention puts them on such a high plateau, when in reality it's false advertising.

Then educate me please. In your opinion, who do you think are the key artists, of say the last ten years? Who have brought something new to the musical landscape?

It's music to dance to. I don't care how it's made. There are different types of music (at least for me, and others I know) that cover the field of dancing to in a club setting, and something you'd sit down to and listen. If you want to treat it that way, then only classical music should be treated as anything contriving skill, as everything else is redundant in their eyes. That's why many feel that the noise music genre is the the next great calling, because it's very innovative and doesn't rely on melody which if one wants to get technical holds back current mainstream music. But, that's another argument, which is a very technical issue that goes outside the boundaries of music as it's perceived in today's world.

Ah man, sorry to hear about that. I missed the first two days though, so I missed most of the bands I wanted to see: Tool, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Kings of Leon, The Nightwatchman, The Roots, Hot Chip, and Lily Allen. That was a bummer. But I still came early enough Saturday to catch Railroad Earth, Hot Tuna (sucked), Ziggy Marley, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals (best performance I saw), the Police (not a huge fan, but they were the only act playing at that time), and a little bit of the Flaming Lips, although about that time I was peaking and having a pretty bad trip, so I spent most of the time in my car on my laptop trying to calm down. It's scary as **** to have a bad trip with everyone around like that, so I wanted to get back to something familiar, like the internet. I don't like how they scheduled it though, because at that same time that I was having a bad trip and missing the Flaming Lips, I was apparently also missing Govn't Mule and Galactic. Those three were all pretty much the headliners to me on that day. Then last night I caught Wolfmother, the Decembrists, the White Stripes, and Widespread, which is always cool. I'm probably forgetting a band or two, but that was basically the summary of my trip; some good times, some scary times, a lot of down time, and a lot of good drugs. I can't wait till next year - hope to see you there!

(Oh, BTW, if anybody does not have a wireless laptop, it's a must. I'm loving this thing. How cool is it be to go back to your car after the show and just get on JBB or something like you've never left home?)

Sucks that you had a bad trip at a fantastic place like Bonnaroo. I had gotten my hands on some DMT that I was going to use when I went, but that went under as you know. I'm hesitant to do it now. I need something special, as it would be my first time with it.

DMT is a helluva drug. It doesn't last that long either, so it probably would have been better to take at Bonnaroo incase of a bad trip. I was on some pretty standard lucy my friend brought. I'd taken this type before many times and had wonderful trips, but I think the atmosphere just freaked me out. I managed to pick up some 2C-D there though, or at least that's what the guy said it was. It looks a lot like 2C-I, so it's probably just that, but I'm still pumped to try it out. You ever come across any of it? I haven't even heard of it until now.

I've never tried it. I've heard it's a loophole drug just about, and that's what got me interested, but I've never really researched it aside from that.
