The Will Barton Trade

You don't know that. If we all stayed healthy we were a contender. Afflalo came to be that missing piece and our 6th man.

We lost the first game after the Afflalo trade, a close battle with the Grizz. Then a 5 game win streak, including victories over the Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, & Mavs. We were looking like a contender until Wesley's heel (and our season) blew up. AA solidified what had been a shaky bench. Who knows how this trade would be viewed today had Wes stayed healthy & AA been able to continue his role as our 6th man? Besides, I'm still not convinced a successful team can rely on Fast Willie Barton even now. He puts up decent numbers in Denver, but is up and down like a yo-yo.

And to make matters worse, Afflalo suffered some kind of shoulder injury (or something like that) and played the rest of the year at less than 100%.

Every time we get close, the wheels come off. Sigh.

Will Barton isn't even starting on a mediocre team....I like his hustle but seriously I think folks overestimate Will the way they overestimated TRob....remember how upset folks got when TRob got moved? Will is not fixing your defense anytime soon. He's a guy I like and adds to a bench, but he's not getting MIP or making an allstar team anytime soon either...when Wes went down we still had Rolo and Nico underwhelming...mailing it in...only CJ and Meyers showed any fire in that series

My all-time best "possible" Trail Blazers lineup would have been:

Fat Lever - Michael Jordan - Clyde Drexler - Larry Bird - Moses Malone

All were available for this team to draft or acquire (Malone).

Barton started 2 games ago and had 31/8/5. In his last game, he came off bench and had 17/7/7. We don't have anyone on our bench that can do this.

That trade didn't happen. We traded picks, not players.

Semantics. We didn't want Chris Paul (or Deron Williams) because we already had our franchise cornerstone PG in Telfair. We wanted Webster, so we traded down and got Linas Kleiza & the Brittish Bulldog (following year) to go along with Webster.

Screw Lever. Could've had those other 4 plus prime Sabas.

Actually, the two picks we acquired in the trade got us Webster and Jarrett Jack. Jack got us Bayless who got us a pick which got us Gerald Wallace who got us a pick which got us Lillard. The Will Barton trade left us with nothing.

How do we know we let him bolt? Also that trade was MADE for that season, that is obvious we thought we had a shot at an NBA championship and we took it. Go look at the old Nuggets realgm forum and you will see how pissed off fans were on Denver thinking they got very little value in return for Affalo.

People leave logic out when they dont get the desired results.

It's called looking like a fool. They'll learn eventually. Well, some of them. Some of them won't, because logic befalls them.

And then there are some who can't fathom that people can look at the same data, and come to a different conclusion.

I said it was a bad trade at the time, using very sound logic.

Haven't seen anything in searching the forum that shows you voiced your displeasure of Barton leaving in the trade at the time. You did want Chandler over Afflalo (which I agreed with) but you didn't say we should keep Barton publicly until the summer after we dealt him and you saw him do fairly well at DEN.

What I did find is below and we have all been wrong a time or to so not calling you out. I bet you could find something I said that I regret as well.
I still have yet to see anything from Crabbe, CJ, or Claver to think that any one of the 3 are more than fringe NBA players. T-Rob and Barton have shown a little more, but their status is tenuous at best too. If you can trade any one of the 5 for a solid rotational player - you do it.

I'm happy for Will...I think the trade gave him a rotation job which they didn't envision for him here..Will was really streaky...he'll help you win some games ..this season I've only seen him play a couple times and he got burned on the defensive side of the court...not sure we miss that element..he's a tough spark plug though and when it clicks he's really fun to watch

My issue wasn't so much trading Barton, as it was overpaying for Afflalo.

Here is one of my posts over at Realgm from before the trade:

DEN is asking for a 1st for Afflalo... Olshey, you listening?!
Denver has been asking for a first for a long time... and yet Afflalo is still on Denver's team. What does that tell you? That Afflalo is not worth a first round pick.

It's a different conclusion, yes.

But it's the wrong one.

I was furious when Will was traded (as a throw in no less) after he was one of our best players in the playoffs.
Then Stotts benched him and he was traded as an average filler player.

Barton was rough around the edges but was a straight up baller. A little out of control - yes, but the talent was clear.
Once again another player that doesn't develop under Stotts.

Barton is not the only example. T-Rob still hasn't found his place but would have been maybe our best PF if he stayed. Frazier would have been essential to our success and is now a starter for a team not far behind us in the standings. Leonard is another great talent being held back. We're far from fullfilling our potential and I think most of it is on the coach, some of it is having too many players all getting 15 minutes per game and not a real chance.
