Tim Donaghy, the former NBA referee, will be released from prison on June 17th. Donaghy, convicted for betting on professional basketball is serving a 15-month sentence at the federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida.

Donaghy’s release date has recently been in question due to concerns about his medical condition. Donaghy was injured during an assault in November of 2008. During the assault, another inmate claiming ties to the New York mob beat Donaghy with a heavy object. Donaghy suffered severe knee and leg injuries that will require surgery.

why are you mad at him? if he's telling the truth, he fixed the 02 WCFs for the Lakers...

yeah, seriously...I thought you would have an alter dedicated to him....

There's about four or five more refs that I'd have preferred this happen to over Donaghy.

Wow...

Don't fuck with or turn on the mob. :]

I think that what donaghy did was terrible, but he does not deserve to be beaten so badly he requires surgery. If he were a child molester or something then he deserves to be beaten. I feel a little sorry for the guy. He will be absolutely hated by everyone not in his family for the rest of his life... although he brought that upon himself.

No, this is bullshit.
This is a terrible thing that has happened and I hope the assailant is punished appropriately. Violence as punishment must remain under the exclusive monopoly of the state as much as possible. We've already ruined the man's career, taken away his dream job, and thrown him in a motherfucking cage with a bunch of sociopaths and violent offenders. I am of the opinion that getting his legs broken is a tragedy. I wish him a full recovery and that he might return to be a productive member of society.
Remember, the mob threatened his family to get him into this position. It's not like he waltzed up to some guy named Vito and said "hey, why don't I throw a point margin or two?" Did he do bad stuff, yeah, he did. However, the state is punishing him enough and if the assailant is indeed associated with the mob, it sets a dangerous disincentive for reffs who might be blackmailed by the mob from coming forward.

Oh dear God. You and sabas are freaking pansies. He got what he deserved. You fuck around with the mob, you are going to get fucked up. Stop living in your little tree-hugger Oregon world and look at the big picture.

And the mob didn't just come up to him and say "hey, fix games or else." He benefited from it and got money for it. Get your shit straight.

Although is not acceptable to get that kind of beating it sure is expected when dealing with the mob. What does my 8 year old say? "You get what you get and you dont throw a fit?" Sucks to be him but ..... but be smarter than the situation.

I think it's great. Prison should suck as far as I'm concerned. My only problem with the whole thing is that there is no way I think he is alone in all of this.

I used to work with incarcerrated veterans and this is child's play. I'm told an inmate can be killed by another for a years worth of smokes. That said, if he did cross the mob or caused some mobsters to lose some money his life isn't going to be worth 10 cents when he gets out- unless an inmate slams a screw driver thru the side of his head before hand.

Agree. Prison is apt punishment, assault is not.

Exactly. Prison isn't band camp, like county time.

Because I care about the integrity of the game believe it or not

If you cared about the integrity of the game, you should promote the disbanding of the league's two favorite teams: the Lakers and the Knicks. Because of referee bias, as long as those two teams are in the league, the game's integrity will be dubious. Of course, we could invoke the Knicks solution to ref favoritism: require the Lakers to hire Isaiah Thomas as GM, and give him unlimited authority!

As for the beatdown, I don't like it. I think TD should have gotten 15 years in a Martha Stewart/Country Club Prison instead of 15 months in a thug-infested one. No beatdown, but no liberty either.

I'm in Texas. Also, I am a law student. I think I might know just a bit about crime and punishment. Haven't been in Oregon in 10 years and I'm a pistol packing, libertarian leaning, fiscal conservative. I am looking at the big picture, that's why I said what I said.

Get your shit straight.

Hopefully Monte Mcutchen can be the next one to fall. He is the only one I feel is fixing games right now.

The bottom line is that a man was assaulted and battered by a malicious person who was not acting with any privilege, self defense or otherwise. Our prison system needs reform badly. Though it's not supposed to be a jolly good time, and I can assure you from personal experience that it is not a good time, we also should not subject people to being beaten, killed, or raped. If a cop did this to Donaghy, it would be headline news and the cop would get burned in effigy. However, we're willing to chalk up this tragedy to "that's just how prison is, that's what he gets." No, that is unacceptable.
Prison is not just a punishment, it is a mechanism to attempt to rehabilitate offenders and return them to productive life. People make mistakes, bad ones. Hell, the criminal justice system makes mistakes, bad ones. These people do not deserve to be subjected to beatings, rape, or killings. We are locking these offenders into cages, taking away years of their life, breaking up families, ruining future employment prospects. Don't tell me we ought to let them get beaten, killed, or raped on top of all that.

The mark of a civilized society is that we do not endorse or allow such brutal behavior. Look, punishment does not restore anything. If a murderer is incarcerated, he is completely deterred from committing that crime (against general society) for the duration of his sentence. The idea here is to prevent him from killing anyone else for the duration of his sentence, to deter him from killing in the future after release, and to serve as a general deterrent that would be offenders might consider their actions before killing. However, all of that will not bring a dead man back. All of that won't dry one single tear, (though it may prevent some tears). You can't tell me that allowing a man to be beaten, killed, or raped serves ANY good purpose whatsoever. It's a damn tragedy and anyone who thinks otherwise is a sadist IMO.

How much time did you do?

Exactly. He is taking the fall to cover up for others. Those others, are the ones who will take care of him when he is out and can't get a job.

Donaghy was beaten up by a member of the Mob, which bets regularly on NBA games and tries to bribe officials, and you're cheering him on because of the "integrity of the game"??

enough to inspire me to get a law degree to make sure I never went back. I was incarcerated for something I did not do, a scary and traumatic experience. Also, my brother has been in and out of jail. Now he's in college and making something of himself. I have an uncle who's been in and out of prison in oregon for years, he's a case though.

County or Prison?

A crime commited inside prison walls is still a crime, and should be punished. That doesn't mean that Donaghy deserves one shred of sympathy. This was not a random act - this happened at the hands of a former business associate.

When you make a deal with the devil, you don't get to whine when he comes to collect.

I could care less one way or another. I will say I wish this was the punishment for child molestors. Funny after reading the bible I was really surprised how often it mentions punishment of stoning someone to death. I'm tired of seeing so many kids being kidnapped, raped, and/or murdered. Maybe it's time for change in punishment for these type of offenders. Sorry got off topic....... just pisses me off..

There isn't a god, but there sure as hell are a lot of bad people in prison who like to beat the hell out of each other. Now that is reality.
