They are trying to tax our beer. Write your state rep

I just read that this week the Oregon State Legislature is taking up discussion of a beer tax that is said to be as high as $50/Keg. Please take the time if you care about this issue and write your state representative with your opposition.

You know what makes me laugh about this is how people FREAK out if they get told there beer could possibly be going up (Read some comments on KGW) but yet we drink Rat poison in our tap water and NO ONE does a damn thing to change it or even try.

Rat Poison!!! I had not heard about that.

But you know, we have to have our priorities. I feel fortunate to live in a city of beer such as Portland, but if we tax our beer, we will actually reduce one of our biggest sources of income for this city.

But, it is pretty ironic that many people who are in favor of raising taxes on a group of Americans already paying almost half of their income to the government, get all fired up about the prospect of a little tax on beer.

Yea no doubt. We could probably fund the whole school system easily if they would just legalize and tax it. And it would still be cheaper.

You guys don't know how good you have it, with or without a new tax. Beer and alcohol are pretty expensive in Ontario. Other than wine, you can only purchase beer and alcohol at the provincially operated Beer Store or LCBO (liquor store). I bought a bottle of Patron Silver at Albertsons when I was in Las Vegas for $45 (less than price listed on website). Exact same bottle locally is $77. Even with the exchange rate it's a lot more.

They do tax spirits a lot in Oregon, especially compared to California. However, Oregon Beer tax is relatively low which helps the local microbreweries. I'm against this much of a tax increase for certain, and have already written to both my local representative and state senator.

There's some economics professors at OSU that specialize in the beer industry. I wrote one of them an e-mail and he affirmed my opinion that this tax is a bad idea.

It's interesting but alcohol sales don't fluctuate like most goods. People drink in good times and bad times about the same amount overall. So it's demand is fairly inelastic.

Our *oregon* beer tax is lowest in country... almost nothing. That being said... raising the cost of a six pack by like 75 cents seems a little high.

Until you say who or what the Legislature should tax to raise revenue or until you say what programs should be cut, reactionary groundswell movements to halt this or that small tax are just annoying.

Don't just be against something. State an alternative plan that makes sense.

The Goverment is getting out of control, to see how money hungry they are getting look at some of these idea's they have to gain more money off Booze....

– In Georgia, Connecticut, Indiana, Texas, Alabama and Minnesota, lawmakers are considering legislation this year that would end the ban on Sunday liquor sales. All but 15 states sell booze on Sundays.

– In Nebraska, a state lawmaker has proposed allowing beer to be consumed in state parks as a way to boost tourism. - WTF yea lets all get drunk in front of kids, would love that If my family is visiting.

–In Alabama, a proposal to raise the amount of alcohol allowed in beer from 6 percent alcohol by volume to 13.9 percent is being considered, although some church groups fear it would result in people getting drunker quicker.


These idea's are absurd and like someone else said actually get smart and allow HEMP not just marijuana we could change this whole deal. Hemp would easily take over as number one crop again (1940's Below it was) we have for everything we need from clothes to rope to food. One acre of hemp is equal to 4.4 acres of trees . So not only would we be saving tree's but gaining better quality products than cotton produces and making Billions in income for the US. Sorry for pro-hemp talk but these jackass lawmakers need to start thinking outside the box.
