I still think Thibs is the best coach in the NBA. Taking that roster without D-Rose to the 2nd round of the playoffs is pretty amazing.

They have to finish them off first(which most likely will happen game 6) but its is a forgone conclusion that they will win one of the next three games. I'd still go with Pops as the best coach but Thibs is right up there as well.

Taking a team with two All-Stars in the East to the 2nd round isn't all that amazing. I'm still not sure they even win the series. It took a Nate Robinson miracle to even get to OT today.

The "All-Star" tag in their case is mostly based on their record at the time, largely thanks to Thibs. I agree that Noah should have been an All-Star, but I wouldn't have put Deng up there, and if we put this team in the Western Conference, even Noah would probably miss the cut.

For my money, Pops is still the best and is coming off one of his best seasons to date as a head coach, but I don't think Thibs is outside of the conversation. There are some overrated coaches out there (Scott, Woodson, Hollins, Del Negro, M. Brown, D'Antoni, etc.) that win because of their talent, but Thibs is one of those guys that wins despite his talent.

OT: It's always bugged me that he pronounces his name "Thib-o-doh." Growing up in the south and going to college in New Orleans, I've known several Thibodeau(x)'s, and every single one of them pronounces their name "Tib-o-doh," with a hard T instead of a "Th" sound. I don't know when his family started pronouncing their name that way, but it's spelled the same way as a lot of good friends of mine spell their name, and he's the only guy I've ever heard of who pronounces it with the "Th." In fact, one of my best friends from college goes by the nickname of "Tibs," not "Thibs," with a last name that's spelled exactly the same.

The guy Thibs replaced isn't so bad, either. Del Negro.

Quite the contrast, too. One's the ultimate defense guy, the other's the ultimate offense guy.

The offense guy needs talent to win. The defense guy needs guys who are athletic, big wing span, and who don't necessarily need any actual skills. You can teach a guy to move his feet and stay in front of his man. You can't teach a guy to be LeBron.

Didn't I hear Charles Barkley call the Clippers' offense "the worst half-court offense in history"?

Del Negro is lucky to have a job given the huge leap in quality of the Bulls after Thibodeau took over.

Del Negro coached a seriously injured team to 41-41, then a team decimated by trades for cap space to 41-41. Remarkable.

He also coached that 41-41 team to a near victory over the defending champs (Celtics) in the 1st round, taking them to OT in several games and to 7 games.

With the clippers? 32-50, then 40-26, then 56-26.

Del Negro has been out of the 1st round how many times?

32-50, then Chris Paul.

Chris Paul has won 56 games twice now. Once with Del Negro as coach.

As far as getting out of the 1st round?

Against the defending champs, his team was one basket made from making the 2nd round. 4 OT games in the 1st round. One double OT, one triple OT. That team had Deng and Hinrich, two starters, miss a combined 64 games (over 30 each). And played those playoff games without Deng. They started Tyrus Thomas at PF for lack of anyone else (traded LMA for him, the fools).

De blacko is a horrible coach. Chicago should have had a parade when he left.

Responding to my own post due to the bump.

Ironically, Thibs is forced to play offensive minded players who aren't known for good (at all) defense - Boozer, Robinson, Belinelli. He wins anyway.
