Looking at the roster; we have an opportunity to look very close to the Blazers of 1998-99.

Lillard > Damon
Matthews < Rider (only because rider could create his own shots and get to the line)
Batum > sheed (because sheed played out of position)
Aldridge > Brian grant
Lopez < sabas

But the major resemblance is our bench.

CJ = Greg Anthony (in terms of talent, Anthony way better because he was such a defensive stopper)
No real back up guard like Jim Jackson
Wright = Walt Williams
Barton = Stacy augman
T. Robinson = jerm oneal
Leonard = Cato (Cato was a better defender, but I think Leonard cancels it out with offense)

So who can we get to be our "Jim Jackson"? Maybe we offer battie a small contract?

Barton has a long way to go before he is The Plastic Man!

Sorry Mags, just No.

We have nothing comparable to Augmon and Anthony. Those guys were awesome defenders that gave their opponents fits.

Well I guess we will see, but remember that no one really thought that blazer team was gonna be a top 4 team either; yet we became #3; almost #1 for most the season.

Plastic man wasn't much of a scorer. I think Barton has the length to be at that level. He's definitely can be as good of a defender as augman.

I just don't see it.

Sheed
Grant
Sabonis

was much better than

Batum
Aldridge
Lopez

If Sheed and Aldridge are a wash in terms of talent, Grant was much more valuable than Batum and Lopez couldn't hold Sabonis' jock strap. In fact, the lack of anyone even remotely as good as Sabonis negates the whole comparison.

You should look at their numbers. Sheed at SF was a 14 point scorer. He averaged less rebounds than batum as well. Batum defended the sf position better than sheed as well.

You can negate the argument about sabas; but Lillard is much better than Damon by a long shot. Sabas was just a good passer from the block. Defensively; Lopez is quicker and had the ability to block just as many shots.

Aldridge is much better than grant hands down. Grant was energy and that's it.

Not seeing the resemblance sorry man. Batum even with Sheed playing out of position was not better than Sheed. That team's size dwarfs this team. From a defensive standpoint they were significantly better. Up front and on the perimeter. And they were deeper. I have heard by many that this team is deeper but there a still a lot of unknowns with that depth.

yeah no

id rather have sheed/bg/sabas any day of the week

and the benches....just no

anthony/wiz/augman/jo was deep as fuck, not to mention JJ

Sheed, Grant, and Sabas formed a HUGE frontline. We don't have that.

HEy guys..just had to stop in and see if Mags is OK...the thread title made me believe that perhaps, he had slipped and hit his head...

I'm with mag. We're stacked. Last time we had this much depth was 99. I'm very happy with this offseason. Very happy. We are now better than Grizz, Warriors, and Clips. They were only better than us last year because of their depth. Now that we have quality depth, they have no advantage ove us. Go Blazers.

Eric, I think you and Mags would only rival MB/Rice in your homerism

I do like how the team could be potentially compared to the 98-99 team, instead of the 21 win team of about 9 years ago.

Top 4 in no particular order is Spurs, Rockets, Thunder, and Blazers. Then there is a huge dropoff to Warriors/Nuggets/Grizzlies/Pelicans territory.

You need to compare Sheed to Batum at SF, Grant to LMA at PF, and Sabas to Lopez at C.

LMA >>>>>> Grant
Sheed > Batum at SF ... maybe?
Sabas >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>R. Lopez

Sheed didn't play SF that year. He came off the bench at PF. The SFs were Walt Williams and Stacy Augmon.

See, the entire argument was flawed to begin with, wasn't it? It would be more appropriate to compare Sheed with Thomas Robinson, then.

So grant/sheed better than Aldridge/trob? I would say it's a wash.

Batum/wright/Barton is much better than augman/Walt

The only thing the Blazers have over that squad is Damian Lillard over Damon. You put Batum over Rasheed? The only comparable front court we've had to Rasheed/Grant/Sabonis was Lucas and Walton. And our bench kicked ass...this bench looks better on paper than last year's squad, but still looks mediocre at best.

I don't think this thread should be about slamming the 99 team. They were one of the best teams in Blazers' history. Legit contenders. I think our depth reminds me of 99 and I am excited but we are still unproven.

P.S. when discussIng the 99 team, do not dismiss the greatness of Kelvin Cato. He was our backup center and was a big part of that team's success.

Can't wait to bump this thread next season.

Also, do not forget JO. That team was long and tall. We have Aldridge, Withey, Leonard, and Lopez which isn't all that bad.

99s bench could have won 40 games

anthony
jj
augman
jo
cato

wizard
and dont sleep on 22 year old bonzi

Exactly!!! I am referencing that team because that was my favorite squad. I think we have a shot at getting that good!
