Thorn: “It Takes Time”
January 21, 2008, 2:07 am There’s not much new to report from the (somewhat) weekly Rod Thorn update. The Nets president believes that his team will come along eventually and is struggling at this point because they made a major mid-season rotation shift, adding Josh Boone and Sean Williams to the starting lineup. They just need time to gel. Thorn did not comment on the Jermaine O’Neal speculation, but other sources will tell you that there was never much to it.

The Good: JON isn't coming to NJ.
Bad: Regardless of your feelings towards RJ or VC, we're playing poorly and we're going to ride this one out.

I don't see the need for him to keep confirming this. We know nothing will be done.

It's not like the Nets are a contender that's losing and people are expecting something to be done so they compete. This is and will be the Nets team.

I consider this good news although I am tired of hearing the usual variation of "we just need to find our rhythm" from our coaching staff.

How long did it take Boston to develop chemistry....we've had VC, RJ and Kidd for 3+ seasons now.....

good, hopefully this team plays like it was built, you stupid ol bastage

But they have KG. KG is like a glue guy, he gets boards, he draws double teams, and is a good passer, and he is a defensive anchor, scores down low.

Maybe the Nets just need a low-post scoring big man?

Sounds like an echo......Too bad O'Neal is injured....and Gasol is playing way above his head...sort of like VC in his contract drive.

They still want 2 move Gasol.

I don't disagree that Vince is playing bad this season but have you ever thought that maybe Vince plays better WITHOUT RJ? Isn't it interesting that his two best seasons as a Net, at least statistically wise, were without RJ? Vince isn't a player than can be utilized without the ball. He needs to have the ball to feel involved that's why this new offense that runs moreso through RJ isn't helping Vince out much. Sure it's helping RJ put up career numbers scoring wise but it's not helping the team utilize Vince or even help the team win that much. Personally I feel that with RJ being the go-to-guy the team is a less than .500 team but with Vince as the go-to-guy the team is a .500 team or maybe a little more.

I am just going to remember the Nets best games. Vince was THE GUY. Game 3 and Game 4 vs TO. Our best playoff games in recent memory. VC DOMINTED. he got the ball and created

Remember vs Cleveland this year? Vince had 32pts and like 6 assists. He got the ball and CREATED and dominated the Cavs.

In the last week or so, Vince has been getting the ball far too little and RJ has gotten the ball far too much.

Right now, its simply who is the main go to guy. Frank says RJ. But our record says Vince.

I am not that confused. I know the problem and its been proven over the years that when VINCE IS THE GUY. the team wins more and has a chance to win.

I'm not one to base my opinion on a single game, nor would I ever attempt to (hopefully). But yesterday's game against the Suns serves as a good example because it's probably fresh on people's minds: Vince had opportunities, but he just didn't do anything with them. To be fair, this issue of consistency is something that the entire team is poor at.

The problem is defense and the fact that the three best players on the team don't play it. Vince, Kidd and RJ are fake stars, All they care about is their numbers and the W can go to hell.

Kidd is happy with a .500 team and not one peep from Vince or RJ about how bad this season has been.

Yea, that's what I noticed too, when he gets the ball in scoring position, he's dumping the ball off. He can't think the whole team will revolve around him. It's a system that he needs to participate in or it won't work. He needs to put the shot up when it's there, he needs to attack the whole when his defender is crowding him. He can't expect 30 scoring opportunities a game and complete 10 of them. He's probably looking at half of that now with the greater emphasis on the motion. Does that put more pressure on him to complete more opportunities? No it doesn't, those 15 other opportunities are going to other players who are in a better scoring position. Sure VC from 15 is better than Collins from 2. VC's just got to play within the system 100% of the time.

Whether or not you believe the real story about Kidd's 'sick day,' there were plenty of buzz that Kidd was becoming publicly pissed at the team.

that is soooooo true this team is okay with who they are. They know they have no chance of winning a chip so they are okay with being second round knockout

And the owner doesn't care, and the GM does nothing, and the coach - the only guy who seems to give a shit - is the one who gets dumped on the most.

I'm gonna start by saying I don't like Vince Carter...
That being said I completely agree with you. RJ and Vince don't play well together...its just the way it is. This experiment needs to be over because its obvious they just can't mesh on the court. At this point I say trade either one depending on the best offer...either way we should get back at least two players and a draft pick.

I only care about Vince Carter, f**k the rest of the team. I really wish they would ship him out because he's getting older and he's not going to win anything with this horrible franchise.

Prediction: Nets are going to lose tonight becuase Lawrence Frank wants RJ to be the man.

Prediction: This thread is about to go downhill fast!

ah come on man. you give VC fans a bad name. I too am a life-long Vince Carter fan, but I really do have an emotional connection with this team. When they lose, I cant sleep and I feel depressed the next day. I really just think that the team plays better when he is 'the man' and this year, they are treating him like hes just one of the guys. Only a couple games this year did they give him the ball and let him create, and I think I can speak for all Nets fans when I say that the win CLE@NJN was one of our best all year, and Vince was the driving force behind it.

Its easy to sit from afar, and see vince score 10 points and say he doesnt care about the team and he is lazy and a money grubbing what-no, it is what TO media/fans think to. But for those who know Vince, and have followed him through his whole career, been through the best of times and the worst, we know him better than that. He is not the kind of player to do that. He respects the game too much and he would "never disrespect the game" by "not trying." He is very much of an enigma at times. He has the talent to match Kobe but not the play style. He does not have the killer instinct all the time, hardly ever these past years. But when it comes down to it, the nets play their best basketball when Vince is playing on his game and is 'the guy' on this team.

I am not a negative guy. I try to stay optimistic because whenever I find myself bashing players and being negative, my real life gets pretty depressing too. So I am just asking that us Nets fans stick together and stop this bickering and just "all get along".

Poke fun if you want, but I am just speaking my mind here. I love the Nets, I love VC and I love winning. I just hope they can put all of those together and soon. Winning cures everything.

Peace

Now I'm a bit curious. When he was traded to the Nets, didn't he admit not trying in Toronto? Or was that just McGrady?

He did appear in an interview on TNT and it was edited to make it look like he said "at times, no" when asked did you always try. It was obviously edited.

Afterwards, John Thomson called Vince and apologized for how they did that.

Later, with Ahmad, Ahmad mentioned that and vince said "the power of editing"

All Star Weekend 2005, the TO media asked him about that, and he said what I said "anyone who knows me knows that I would never disrespect the game like that"

I have seen every Vince game since the 2002-2003 season, and in those last 15 or so games, I felt he still had all the talent and wanting to win, in fact, he got them off to their best start at 3-0. But the team knew he was on his way out and they wanted to develop their young guys so in most games, they benched him. I went to one of his last games live and saw him arguing with SMitch to let him keep playing. It also happened the next night in LA vs the Clippers. So of course, I do not see that he "didnt try" and all that stuff. He actually had a handful of great games in his last 15 or so games with TO, including a game winner and a lot of yelling/emotional shots.

Fair enough. Just wanted to be sure.
