I love my new Apple iPhone 5, but I sure hate the fact that you can't purchase a decent lightning charger for the phone unless you get it from Apple themselves. Something about a micro-chip they've installed in the cable.

I've purchased 2 other off-brand cables (for my car), but they've both bit the dust on me.

*sigh*

I've got a couple aftermarket ones and had no prob. I'll find where I got them and holler!

Best prices on all things cable is: http://www.monoprice.com

Have had no issues with any of their cables (although I mostly buy android cables, HDMI cables, and stereo cables - haven't tried the Apple ones).

Yeah, I have actually had a lot of success with them and went to their site earlier this morning. Wouldn't you know it, they're out of stock!

Not so fast, my friend...

Silicone removed, we can see exactly what you think that is in the pic. Masking tape. That's right, it's not just for painting anymore. This is a far cry from the steel-armored interior of the Apple cable.

To recap: the cables are shoddily constructed (masking tape!), and there's a chance a future iOS update could totally nuke them. But for now, these cheap-o cables from the dark recesses of some spoof Chinese lab will let you charge and sync your phone just like anything you'd cop at an Apple Store. Peter expects cloned cables to hit the likes of eBay and Amazon within the next couple of weeks—but he certainly doesn't think you should buy one...

To reiterate...I've already purchased two Chinese made lighting cables....one from eBay, with lousy success. I'm not certain the Monoprice cable is not made in China, but at least it carries a lifetime warranty. That's certainly good enough for the girls I date. :)

Everything is made in China; it's just whether the factory is decent or not.
