Thoughts on Allen Crabbe

What do you guys think was the plan for him? Clearly he was targeted, since Olshey gave up 2 picks to get him. But we also have Matthews and drafted McCollum. Do you think the intention was for McCollum and Crabbe to comprise our reserve backcourt? Does McCollum's apparent lack of PG skill limit that possibility? Or is Crabbe supposed to eventually be Matthews' replacement? Or McCollum's backup? Or do you think Olshey just saw him as an under-valued first round talent?

I guess the basis of my question is this: if Crabbe, McCollum, and Matthews (and Lillard, of course) are all supposed to (eventually) simultaneously be contributing parts of the roster, how are they supposed to fit together?

Long term, we will not have Crabbe, Barton, and CJ all on this team. Someone will go. With that said, I think Neil was just adding talent to the roster, and then you go out and try to develop them. I'm actually really excited to see what Crabbe can do this summer after a year in the league. I'm most excited to see how he does in summer league. I like Barton, I like Crabbe, but those guys are projects right now. CJ is a guy who can step in and help right away.

I do think Crabbe should be in the D League. I want to see him get minutes.

He's a shooter. Stotts' system depends on 3 point shooters. He provides depth in case of injury.

I agree with Nate. CJ is a very good scorer, but so-so defender and has not shown PG skills to this point. Crabbe is not as versatile of a scorer as CJ, but he shoots the 3 well and defends much better. Crabbe seems to fit as an emergency backup for Wes and possibly Nic. CJ is more of a Dame backup and could also play beside him.

I'm not sure which is more useful at this point, and may not know until we see if someone gets hurt.

He hasn't looked remotely comfortable in any playing time this year, whether that be summer league, pre season or scrub minutes.

I just think Olshey was thinking best player available and he was playing the odds that Crabbe had a better chance of making the roster than a later 2nd round pick. Not sure he had any long term plans for him other than he liked him and thought he was the best possible asset to be our 14th or 15th guy.

But I think the kid has a lot of potential. I keep hearing that he's amazing in practice, but that means nothing unless it translates to the court. That's why I'm excited about this summer. If he doesn't show any significant improvement in the next summer league, I'll be disappointed. I like Barton though. I like what he brings to the table. He plays a little out of control, but he's athletic, he plays decent defense, and he attacks the basket. We can use more of that.

Why not? How much better are late 2nd round picks than say other decent young free agents that are out there trying for that last roster spot. Did we really need two 2nd rounders? In my mind there are plenty of decent players who get cut at the last minute. It is nice to have an open spot for them. Guys who are equally as good as a late 2nd round pick.

Olshey dealt 2 second rounders for Thomas Robinson, and 2 others for Robin Lopez. In Olshey's hands, 2 second rounders translates into a rotation player, even a starter. They're currency, and they have value. IMO, a 15th-man is much, much too low a target for two second-rounders for Olshey. I have no doubt that he has higher hopes for Crabbe than "perpetual member of the inactive list".

A lot of those are long term value picks. I think Leonar_ has not progressed as hoped. So yes, you get a whiff by NO on that one.

Barton and Crabbe were both second round sliders and I think both could end up being San Antonio late bloomer type picks--guys you develop and when you need them, they all the sudden come on and fit your system. They both have real rotation skills, but just don't have time given the success of the rotation.

CJ is an unknown. He was drafted before Mo was in the fold, so he made more sense at the time. But, he was also considered by many to be a top 7 pick, who we got later than that. Probably was PBA.

I think it is really too early to tell how good NO is at the draft. He certainly has an eye for talent and chemistry, as proven by his FA picks. Time will tell on the rest.

I have nothing but my "golden gut" to go on but I having a feeling that Crabbe would perform well in the right line-up given the chance. It might take him a bit to get going but as a shooter with other starters, I think he could fit well there.

The draft is such a crap shoot. Some of it is skill, but a lot of it is luck. Oden was supposed to be a sure thing, but his health turned him into a huge bust. You can't predict that. Nobody thought Paul George was going to be this good. Nobody thought Dame was going to be the ROY before the draft.

Not sure we are disagreeing on this topic. I am sure he has high hopes for him too. That is why he moved up to get him. My point was he saw something in him and it was worth the extra 2nd rounder to get him. But right now he is the 14-15th player on the roster. I can't see how Olshey did not expect that when he took him. Doesn't mean he will always be the 14-15th guys. Seems like it was an investment for the future.

I think Crabbe will be a poor man's Dorrell Wright. Decent defender, outside threat, etc.

If one of our SFs get injured, he's just insurance there at that spot. He should be in the d-league though just to get burn.

Bledsoe was picked 18th overall in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder but was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers

He was traded for a future first round pick on draft day. So, in essence he was drafted by NO.

His biggest miss was taking Aminu over George. Especially since George was from the area and played both HS/NCAA ball right there giving Neil ample opportunity to scout him.

George also said he really wanted to play there.

Can you imagine? Bled/George/Griffin/Deandre on the same team? Championships for like the next decade.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with Crabbe early in the pres-season when he got playing time, especially against Phoenix when he went 6-11. What struck me was that although he did look uncomfortable (understandable for a rookie in preseason) he seems like he could be a glue-type guy who just knows how to play the game. I had heard he could shoot from outside but he also had a few nice drives, rebounded at times and played some defense. Then he got sidelined with gastroenteritis and that was about the last we've seen of him. But I have higher hopes for him than I do for Barton, for example.

I might be off base, but I see Crabbe as a guy who you run off screens. He could be a poor man's Rip Hamilton. Barton on the other hand reminds me of a Corey Brewer. They both have their place, and can both be useful if they continue to develop.
