HA! that's fucking comical. Yes the inflated sense of worth is in the fans of the globally celebrated but locally mocked sport. It's definitely not the asshole football, basketball and baseball fans that feel the need to constantly talk shit, troll and attempt to degrade such a fantastic sport because some people DARE to be excited about it.

I don't align myself with the soccer shit talkers, but I am certainly not a fan of soccer in any way. I always ask people why they like it, but that doesn't seem to help me. I wonder if you (or other soccer fans) have an opinion on why I don't like soccer. I'm just curious. I know that some people have an irrational bias towards soccer because of some ridiculous notion that it is "un-american" or "not a real sport" or some other stupid reason, but that isn't me. And yes I realize that some people just don't like certain things, I'm just wondering why. The only sports I like are basketball (I LOVE IT) and football (I just like it). I am as little a fan of baseball as I am soccer. Another thing I just thought to add is that my parents never shoved any sport down my throat, all my dad knows about sports is what I tell him. And he almost always forgets that too.

Sorry that this is off-topic, it just intrigues me.

i don't bash soccer, i just don't like it. i think the number of soccer fans is equivelant to a very vocal minority. they are loud in the nw, so the masses think there are more of them, then there really is. you can't tell me the timbers would gather nearly as much support as a team like the blazers, who packed PCS for a rally about making the playoffs. soccer will never have a spot in the american landscape like baseball, football and basketball. other sports have tried to challenge those three and have fallen back to the pack and i suspect soccer will be the same.

i have no problem with the timbers being in portland, or that they will be an mls team, i just see the league for what it is. i don't think it's another major league team, but in time that may change, though i have doubt it will.

Ahhh, precious, he thinks he knows things. Here's a snack lil' feller, now go on back to the group.

ahhh....do you have some orange slices for me? how about a capri sun? aren't you a cute wanna be hipster.

I think MLS has a chance to challenge the NHL but that is about it.

This is per game, and of course MLS has a lot fewer games:

1. NFL - 67,508.69 (2009 season)
2. MLB - 30,213.37 (2009 season)
3. MLS - 18,452.14 (2010 season, as of 04/11/2010) MLS - 16,120 ( 2009)
4. NBA - 17,149.61 (2009/10 season)
5. NHL - 16,985.31 (2009/10 season)

At this point I think it might be an exaggeration to describe MLS as Triple A by your definition.

The idea of "Major league" doesn't translate to soccer so easily.
Where do Brazil's and Argentina's league's rank? How 'bout the Netherlands or Portugal? None of those leagues are in the top three, but all of those countries have world beating national teams.

So understand this: MLS doesn't have to be the best league in the world to be "Major League." If MLS makes it into the top 6-8 leagues in the world that is enough, and that's a realistic GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Post Baracuda... especially when top leagues like the English Premier League (England played well below expectations) and Spain (Spain has underachieved a lot) Italy (flop) France (LOL Flop) didnt do so well this cup and/or in recent memory. Thats 4 out of the top 5 leagues in the world. Interesting, I havent thought of it that way. repped good sir.

Not sure I understand your point that its been around longer than the championship trophy.

Portland Trail Blazers started in 1970.
Portland Timbers started in 1975.
Portland Trail Blazers won the trophy in 1977.

Fixed

So what happens with all the new Timbers MLS gear that sports the old "new" logo?

Went to my first Timbers game last night. Loved it. Eventually made my way over to the Timbers Army just before half time. I observed them for a while to get a feel for it all. Then jumped in for the most part. Met a bunch of cool people. Was given a chant cheat sheet from a hot chick. Drank too much beer. And the match went in to penalty kicks. I wish the Timbers would have won, but it was an extremely entertaining experience and I'll be doing it again. It blows AAA baseball experience out of the water. Not. Even. Close.

I went to a Timbers game about eight years ago, I think it was my 21st birthday actually, and I remember a chant about the opposing keeper. I looked on the Timbers Army chant page and I didn't see it. Something about flying over on a carpet... anyway.... it was hilarious. Do you guys not use it anymore?

MLS is a young league, it's for people who buy in that MLS can become a great league someday...you gotta believe...I believe.

The MLS has been around since 1993 (starting play in 1996). The World Cup has only been around since 1930.

It's younger than some other leagues, but it's not like it's a startup.
