Because all people are racist. It's a genetically-ingrained defense mechanism, and without it mankind would have died off thousands of years ago.

The only NOTICEABLY racist supervisor I ever had was in my stint at the USPS. He happened to be black. Easily the most hateful, racist person I've ever met, openly proud of it, and an excellent example of how Affirmative Action has damaged our government's effectiveness by giving important positions to people who are totally unqualified for the job.

I have taken on the habit of referring to ridiculously overt racists as time travelers. As demonstrated by the responses from the first article I posted, normal people realize how wrong it is but are still capable of joking. When presented with something as unbelievable as the story, they drop their humor and give heartfelt rational answers.
