To defend our democracy against Trump, the GOP must aim for a brokered convention

Why are the Democrats happy with the revolt going on inside of the Republican Party?

The reason for the revolt will carry over into the general election. The voters are angry with career politicians misbehaving, all of them including Hillary, not just the Republicans.

I think a lot of the reason for the upheaval is the fact that plenty of people who call themselves "republicans" have vastly different definitions of the term. Is it about social morality? Fiscal conservatism? Corporate deregulation? Constitutional integrity? National security? International superiority? There's so much divergence between different groups who focus on these (and other) individual issues that it's nearly impossible to cover them all under the same umbrella.

The way I see it, we have two totally broken political parties in this country. The Republican mess is the result of a battle between the old guard, main-streamers like Bush and Romney, and the purist ultra-conservative, make no compromises on anything, right wingers epitomized by Ted Cruz. The inability of these groups to work through their differences has allowed an unprincipled interloper like Trump to bull his way into making a grab for the party's nomination. Trump doesn't really have any allegiance to any of the core values of either wing of the party, but he's managed to play the factions against each other with a lot of old-fashioned snake oil salesmanship and bluster to convince enough dissatisfied right-wing voters that he'll break through the gridlock and lead them back to a 1960's vision of American "greatness". He wouldn't have been able to get any traction early on in the race if there hadn't been 16 other candidates splitting the vote. He's a morally bankrupt lout who has no chance at getting elected.

The Democrats have their own internal mess that they're not dealing with in any effective way. The party that once had a high-minded vision expressed by JFK of "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country" has completely turned that on its head. Now it's a dozen different factions all demanding that the country do for them in spades. Bernie has managed to capture the attention of the young voters because at least he has a vision for a new direction for the country. That socialist vision will never translate into enough votes to get him the nomination, but it's been fun watching him in this election. Hillary is as main-stream as they come in the Democratic organization. She's willing to espouse any and all of the calls to action that the factions within the party demand. She has no real commitment to any of them, as the video clips of her wandering heart-felt opinions demonstrate. She has no vision for a better America, she'll just say whatever the masses want to hear in order to get herself elected. Democratic voters seem willing to overlook her massive ethical shortcomings simply because she checks off all of the right boxes on their issues list.

I have no idea what the future holds. Maybe this crappy political season of dreadful candidates is necessary in order to cause some introspection within the parties. Maybe a new generation of leaders will arise to get this country headed towards a better future. Or maybe we've just reached the tipping point where there are too many diverse interests all shouting their demands. Maybe this mess is the new normal. Geez, I hope not.

I still think Trump is a Hillary shill. With all the underhanded crap that the DNC is pulling to get her the nomination, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he was running to help guarantee that she gets the win.

Intentional or not, that's the way it's going to work.

Please understand, I only wish the republican party to damage itself because I believe that America will be better off. It's not out of some dislike of the people, just of the policy. Just as I'm certain that you would believe that America would be better off if we were more conservative.

My statement sounded much meaner than I intended, I am a lefty, I believe in moving America more towards the left, although I certainly have my limits on that bent too.

Wow... That's weird... of all the bad things right-wingers say to us and about us, he simply said that he wants the Republican party to damage themselves and you want to wish him physical harm for that?

Ok, Ok! You can have one too.

That's a super conspiracy theory you have there!

C'mon now...

Interesting and I think you have a pretty good read on the situation. I know very few people who are excited about voting for Hillary, even if they will end up doing so. I know many people who are excited about Bernie, but know the chances of his victory are slim to none.

The truth is, both parties are broken and the US is prime for a big shakeup and new party or two. I don't think it will happen this cycle, but it's coming. I'm interested in seeing Trump get the nomination because I think the net result will be not only will Hillary win, but a third party will be created or highlighted that will garner national attention and hopefully throw a monkey wrench into the political machine.

But even if Trump beats Hillary somehow, I think it would still cause enough chaos on the right and left to require a reworking of the party system. In the end, I think this crazy election cycle could be a boon to our democracy regardless of who actually gets elected. There are no good options, so hopefully people get pissed and demand better.

Or Trump could get elected and turn out to be not as bad as his press.

That is a possibility, you know.

They said a lot of bad things about Reagan and he turned out to be one of the greatest ever.

Or we could poke our eyes with a sharp stick and not go blind.

Or, Bernie can get elected. People who are saying that he has no chance aren't realizing a few things:

1.

2. Delegate count:

Shillary: 1163 to Berns: 844

Bernie's face because he understands he's down only 319 delegates and Cali alone is worth 548:

The Republicans that think of themselves as the establishment are worse than Democrats, the phony bastards.

In order to preserve their positions, they would prefer to see Hillary elected rather than Trump. They surely are worst kind of problem this Nation faces,
just a ball of snakes on the take.

Finally you're starting to understand.

Yeah, the GOP needs to stop aiming for a brokered convention and just take aim with the GOP bandwagon at The Donald himself. Thump, bump...problem solved.

Yesterday Kasich said he wasn't interested in the least in being either Cruz' or Trump's VP.
