When I opined that Roy was no PG, boy did I get hooted down.

Well, tonight Nate tried it twice. Instant suck. Instant loss of lead. Instant I doubt we'll see this again unless Nate's an idiot.

If we lose this game, there's the reason. As bad a coaching decision as I've ever seen.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. e need a PG.

You MAY be right...but two instances don't make it a fact. Roy did fine at point guard last season. So far this season, he's not been up to his normal form at any position. I don't think this necessarily means anything.

If we add a PG, how does Rudy get on the floor?

I don't think Nate was playing Roy because he was the best option at the point, but because he wanted to play Rudy and Roy together.

Ed O.

I don't think it would change. The new PG would take the role of Blake while Roy and Rudy would still play their normal rotations. Both are 1/2/3's with Roy able to run the point in spurts. For the time being it would probably increase the p/t available as Outlaw, most likely, and possibly Blake/Sergio included in the deal.

One great thing about the Pistons during their run of the last 6 years is that they know exactly what 5 they want at the end of games and its the exact same unit that opens games. It was always Billups-Rip-Prince-Sheed-Dyess/Ben.

We need to find our set 5. I would like it to be Bayless, Roy, Batum, LMA, Oden. It leaves Rudy out but it's either him or Roy.

No he didn't.

He sucked at it the very few times he played it.

Play The Serge!

Which is stupid.

If he wants to play matchmaker, he can buy them tickets to a chick flick.

Personally, I'd start Rudy and Sergio, and bring Blake and Roy off the bench.

is that what you meant too say?

I disagree. When I saw Roy at PG it was the same thing. Slow, plodding, turnovers... it was terrible. Granted, I didn't every game when this was tried, but the ones I did were brutal.

110% agreed. We need to establish players roles on this team.

Those Pistons players all had something that everyone on this teams lacks outside of Roy. Consistency. Put Steve Blake at the head of that team and they probably don't make it out of the East.

We need an upgrade in talent and basketball IQ at a couple positions to really make a serious playoff run.

The other thing that coincided with Roy playing PG was Travis. He scored his points but it's obvious to anyone not jaded that Baum gives more to the team when he's on the floor.

More athleticism is needed.

More athleticism is needed.

Bayless, Outlaw, Aldridge, Batum, Oden are extremely athletic...

Webster, Roy, Rudy are pretty athletic as well.

IDK man, i dont think athleticism is the problem... well actually I think i know what the problem is. Its greg. Without him we aren't a playoff team. We put too much stock in him and ran our offense through him throughout training camp and he is gone after 13 minutes. If Greg doesn't live up to expectations then its going to be really sad.

I think the same thing, but haven't wanted to bring this up. Our overall talent & IQ level are not what most people think they are. There is such a tendency to view this team thru Rose Garden colored glasses.

The majority of this team is BUILT TO RUN and we don't run much at all (Hmmm). We are so soft inside and live and die by the outside shot. Our D is so bad we may as well run a lot more as our strength is certainly not a half court offense at this time! What exactly is the offfense? I and the players look confused as hell.

I like Nate, but ultimately is he the right coach for the players KP has assembled?

Athleticism. I've been saying it all along, and I told ya so. I'm telling you so again.

The Blazers on paper have all these great players, mostly top draft picks. Assembled, they're one of the least athletic teams I've seen in the league. They're built to be a half court team that dumps the ball into Oden or LMA for scoring.

Roy is a brilliant player who makes up for his lack of athleticism with a super high bball IQ.

There's no comparison between this team and the Lakers. Kobe at age 30+ is still a better athlete than anyone on this team. Odom can handle the ball at the wing, pass, and take it to the hoop with authority - he's a better athlete than anyone on this team, too. Gasol runs the floor extremely well and can score in the post and from some range.

Watch the games. Who on this team consistently takes the ball on the wing and makes his own shot near the rim?

My take is that the real improvements this team needs are a PG and SF who are quick and great defenders.

I think the team is very athletic. I think the coach holds them back from displaying it. As pointed out before, Bayless, Rudy, Webster, Batum, Outlaw, Aldridge and at some point Oden are all very good athletes. Roy is good enough, as is Sergio.

I couldn't agree more with you about players taking the ball from the wing and creating though. I think Batum can do this, Roy and Rudy both can as well, and I think Bayless can probably do it too. The problem with our team is it's not the offense we run, Nate likes structure instead of motion.

I also couldn't agree more that we need a perimeter defender at PG. Batum is a very good wing defender, but Blake sucks at perimeter defense. I would give Bayless a shot and live with his rookie undoings until he learns the possition better.

They aren't built to run half court. It's all Nate. If this team had a coach like D'Antoni or Iavaronni you would see they are very athletic. KP wants to run and has built a team for it. The coach is the square peg.

It is Greg . . . and it is just not him out there dominating. Because of this big #1 hope, the Blazers haven't concentrated on big men. You figure with Joel and Oden you got plenty of big bodies to bang and bruise underneath.

But without Greg, all you got is Joel. Joel is great and all, but can't control the paint by himself. This thread is about cringing when Roy is PG (I agree to an extent) . . . I cringe when Joel comes out of the game, how sad is that.

This team has athletes, the problem is this team is soft. And do the Blazers sit and wait for Oden to fix that problem or do they act now and try to save the season. Because I agree with Mr. J . . . as it stands now this season playoff chances rise and fall on a player who seems to always get injured as soon as he step on the court . . . and sometimes before.

Jason Quick said:
"Marc Iavaroni will become the next Trail Blazers coach, The Oregonian has learned, after the team offered the Phoenix Suns assistant the position late Thursday. Iavaroni, 48, will accept the job as early as today, a source close to the talks said, exactly one week after he was interviewed for the first time at the Chicago pre-draft camp."

So, maybe Jason Quick isn't a bad journalist after all. Maybe he's a profit. He KNEW Marc Iavaronni was the best choice for the next Blazers coach and he had a vision of him on the sidelines coaching the Blazers. His timing was just off by a few years.

BNM

I never looked at it from the prophet view point. You could be right. Although this team fucked up when it didn't hire TP. He is a solid coach with an understanding on how to best utilize his players.

I hope I don't rant too much after last night's game, but.....

1) Roy sucked (for being Roy) last night. He didn't suck at PG more than he sucked at SG. I wouldn't
read anything into the Roy as PG thing based on whole game suckage.

/begin{rant}

2) Even before our 10 pt lead evaporated in front of my eyes, I was wondering why Batum didn't
get rotated back in. I kept waiting for it, but it didn't happen. Maybe he didn't want to put too
much pressure on a rookie, but Batum's +/- was +12. It's not liked they sucked with Batum on
the floor. Let me say that again,

Blazers with Batum (who started): +12
Blazers without Batum (who started): -19

That's certainly not the end all stat, but geez, trust your guys coach.

It really rubs me the wrong way because I felt like the coach was afraid to play Pryz in the 4th
quarter last year, and watched players around the league (including LeBron) make layups to
beat us in games we should have won. In my mind, he's doing it again with Batum. For a
"defensive" coach he sure hates playing defensive-oriented players in the 4th.:rant::rant::rant:

...and I'm a staunch Nate supporter. The Nate-bashers must really be going nuts!

3) I know stats don't matter, but every time we lose the game by 3, Nate has to make sure we
keep fouling at the end of the game so we lose by 7, and look like a terrrible team. Then we have
to put up with John Hollinger's "analysis" which isn't smart enough to take this into consideration.
(yes, it would be easy for Hollinger to do this).

\end{rant}

exhale. One more point about this topic:

4) As crappy as Roy was playing last night, he did get the ball to Rudy for a wide-open 3-pointer
to tie the game at the end, and Rudy missed.

My "told ya so" moment is that one of Roy or Rudy is going to eventually have to be traded. Nate has to make some weird lineups out there just to get them both the minutes they should have, and Rudy is still getting far fewer than he really needs. It's throwing off the entire team.

The good news is that both Roy and Rudy are extremely talented, cheap and young. You can target a really high quality PG or SF with either guy.

I have decided that maybe the two can play together, but there needs to be a different offensive structure. Both are great at attacking the rim, but with the stagnant offense that Nate runs the middle is always congested

When Rudy and Roy are in the game together, Rudy turns into pretty much just a shooter, which really limits what he can do.

But i think it is rediculous to think we should trade 1, they are part of our core 5-7 (if you include Webster/Bayless)

It wasn't because Roy was playing PG last night. His whole game was off. When he was playing SG, PG or anything. He was missing easy shots, and not making good passes. But if you want to put it in the Chronicles of basketball history for somebody to look up and show you were right on one day, go ahead. I am sure plenty of folks will come and look up the stat, that you were right, in the future.

It's not the players, it's the coach. I would like to take you back to the 1980's when two combo guards names Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge played brilliantly together. It's something that isn't very hard to do. Nate just needs to come up with a better offense to take advantage of both of them.

I will disagree. When Roy played PG the entire offense disappeared.

Rudy should actually handle the ball in the backcourt instead of Roy when they play together. He is actually better at it then Roy. He is way faster and can get the team setup quicker. If nothing is there, then he gives the ball to Roy and begins his perpetual motion machine.

Many, many other teams have done this. Why we can't? No idea.
