Told you all Yi was going to be a star.

he's played well for 4 games in a row. that's a very good thing for yi. maybe he's actually becoming an nba player.

but it's still hard to argue that he wasn't one of the worst players in the league the past two seasons.

Holy crap, I don't envy the coaches in the East, having to chose between Yi and Bargnani for that final All-Star roster spot. They are both so awesomely barely above average this year. Of course, that makes them look all-star worthy compared to their previous seasons in the league.

Dude, Bargnani has improved a lot this year, stats don't say it, but he has, he has started to use the post... ya know what, I'm not arguing with you, it's talking to a wall.

If the argument was "you couldn't provide a single quote from a poster saying Barfo was the best", then I'd agree with you. But once the anonymous barfo-lover (who could be barfo himself?) made the quote, the argument is invalid.

KS said that "He failed to provide any quote from a scout about Yi." There was a quote from a scout provided about Yi. I'm not saying that makes Yi a bust or star; I'm not saying it's good journalism or not. I'm saying that, uh, there was a quote from a scout provided. That's scientific.

It isn't a "quote from a scout" if a scout didn't actually write or say it. And the only evidence that a scout did write or say that is the word of the author, and the author's credibility is in doubt, since his statement immediately prior to the quote is pretty obviously false.

In 2004, Yi was listed as being born in 1984 in China's Four Nation Tournament,[52] although Chinese officials said that it was probably a typographical error.[53] Two years later, Fran Blinebury of The Houston Chronicle reported that Yi told Shane Battier he was 24 in an exhibition game before the 2006 FIBA World Championship,[54] although the story was refuted by both Yi and Battier.[55][56] Yi is not the first Chinese player to come under scrutiny, as former NBA player Wang Zhizhi has been listed as being born in both 1977 and 1979.[57][58]
In 2006, a senior CBA official admitted that past youth squads had included players above the permitted age,[59] and Yi's longtime American teammate in China, Jason Dixon, said to Chad Ford that Yi was "21 or 22...It's pretty common over [in China] to change ages".[60] In 2007, a Chinese government registration site made public by hackers showed Yi's date of birth as being in 1984,[61] and in December 2008, a Chinese reporter discovered school registration forms that listed Yi as being born in 1984.[62]

I agree he's improved a lot. How could he not? He used to suck. Now he's a serviceable starting NBA center.

I've watched him play several times this season. In addition to the improved numbers, he's more aggressive and playing with more confidence. Still, he's a long way from being an all-star. His rebounding is still weak and inconsistent. It's just not historically bad (although it's close, his TRB% is now down to 10.5), like it was during his first three years in the league.

Until last night, he was also regressing to the norm. He got off to a really good start and was averaging 21 PPG and had a PER of 21 early in the season. He recently went through a 10 game stretch were he failed to score more than 17 points in a game and couldn't seem to make a 3-pointer if his life depended on it. His PER and scoring average both dipped below 16, but he's pulled them both up over the last three games.

I didn't mean my comments as a bash on Bargnani. I was just trying to point out the ridiculousness of the OPs assertion that Yi is now all-star material. It takes more than short term improvement (five games in Yi's case, a third of a season in Bargnani's) to qualify a player as all-star worthy - especially when that player has been an underachiever for the rest of their NBA career.

Okay, you are right, I read it wrong. My bad.

No probs. I have a history of being critical of Bargnani. So, it's understandable you would take my latest comments in the same way.

He's definitely shown in improvement this season (it actually started late last season -as I'm sure you are well aware). He's now a much more effective offensive player - not just a one-dimensional perimeter shooter. His defense and rebounding have both improved slightly, but still have a long way to go. He's still quite young and if he can just improve those two areas modestly, it will make him a much better player. In fact, that's always been my biggest criticism of Bargnani. I like my bigs to rebound and play defense.

The statement immediately prior to the quote is, "Any NBA scout will tell you that Yi has poor instincts." Why do you say that is "pretty obviously false"? Further, quotes from scouts are almost always anonymous, so any link to a quote from a scout will likely be similarly unsubstantiated.

Do you think this guy has access to every NBA scout, and has polled them all about this, and that every NBA scout agrees (on this or anything else?).

Plus, no NBA scout will tell me anything, so they certainly won't tell me that.

So you're using semantics to undermine credibility? Interesting approach.

It's easy to argue. Look at the facts, for instance. Yi averaged 9 ppg & 5 rpg in 24mpg in his first 2 seasons. That's not bad at all.

Now that Vince Carter is gone, he will blossom. This year will be his breakout year.

Can't wait! Yi vs LeBron is on in 7.5 hours! This will tell us a lot about both players.

Not this year but I will be blown away if Yi isn't an All Star by 2013.

Yi will get into the all-star game even if he's mediocre due to the stupid fan voting. Not saying he won't deserve it someday, but he doesn't right now.

Didn't Flip Murray once burst on the scene early in his career with a bunch of 30-point games (or something impressive like this)?

I would say those performances are the only reason we've even heard his name. Those performances sure didn't guarantee stardom.

Yi getting it done on the defensive end today. Halfway through the 2nd quarter and he already has 2 blocks and 1 steal.

and 0-4 shooting with 2 pts on FTs...and 2 rbds in almost 20 minutes.

SWEET!

EDIT - Woot! he hit a shot, now he has 4 pts!

in twenty minutes: 2 boards, 1-5 from the floor and a +/- of -2. Awesome!!

hey. He already has better stats than Aldridge had in entire game against Orlando. Look for Yi to have a big 2nd half.

So what do you think Yi will end with for the game?

Points?
Rebounds?
Blocks?
Steals?

Yi's greatness is difficult to predict. He can beat you in so many different ways.

Quote attributed to Lawrence Frank two weeks before he was fired, discussing why the Nets can't seem to win a game.

Yi's struggling from the field but he already has 6 rebounds & 3 blocks!

Man, if LeBron goes to NJ, can you imagine Yi and him on the same team?? Crazy.
