In other words, the preseason opener Friday went according to plan for the Knicks, with a 90-84 win over Detroit that was encouraging even if it wasn’t always crisp. Toppin, the eighth overall pick, came off the bench and navigated the NBA terrain like he belonged, scoring 11 points with seven boards in 20 minutes.
