NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.

He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.

It is designed to come into force when doctors believe it is impossible for a patient to recover and death is imminent.

It can include withdrawal of treatment – including the provision of water and nourishment by tube – and on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours.

There are around 450,000 deaths in Britain each year of people who are in hospital or under NHS care. Around 29 per cent – 130,000 – are of patients who were on the LCP.

Professor Pullicino claimed that far too often elderly patients who could live longer are placed on the LCP and it had now become an ‘assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway’.

He cited ‘pressure on beds and difficulty with nursing confused or difficult-to-manage elderly patients’ as factors.

Professor Pullicino revealed he had personally intervened to take a patient off the LCP who went on to be successfully treated.

He said this showed that claims they had hours or days left are ‘palpably false’.

In the example he revealed a 71-year-old who was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia and epilepsy was put on the LCP by a covering doctor on a weekend shift.

Socialized medicine. Gotta love it.

This is one reason I have concerns about Obamacare.

Denny has gone humanitarian! Addressing this complaint will require more funding for socialized health care.

So how much should rich people's taxes be increased?

Re: Top doctor's chilling claim: The NHS kills off 130,000 elderly patients every yea

This is one reason I am scared of getting old.

But I'll certainly let them take all you old bastards first, then I'll make sure I participate in the reform!

Cutting taxes, and cutting the amount of socialism, is exactly what this article describes. Is this one of your dumb days, Denny? Cutting off life support is exactly what you advocate when you want less socialized health care. You're working against your own cause today.

Re: Top doctor's chilling claim: The NHS kills off 130,000 elderly patients every yea

I think he's pointing out that going into a massive deficit for the utopia of socialized health care is neither cost-effective or utopian.

"If someone's family doesn't want to take care of them, why should I?"

Let the govt. spend all the money. Line up for cheese handouts in the parking lot of what used to be the supermarket. If you want a nicer apartment, you better be chummy with a govt. bureaucrat with the power to evict and make that apartment yours.

Let's all be like North Korea. They got it right!

Then he should praise killing off the poor and middle class. Denny's being inconsistent. Many Republican attacks on Democrats are like this. The criticisms sound good to stupid people who don't reflect, but the so-called problems are easily shown to be what conservatives really want.

I think what conservatives really want in this circumstance is for the government to NOT decide who lives and who dies in state run hospitals under a state run healthcare system.

But

that's

asking

just

too

much.

Re: Top doctor's chilling claim: The NHS kills off 130,000 elderly patients every yea

Then you need an article showing that government committees make individual death decisions. The article you have says that conservative doctors circumvent socialized medicine by slaughtering patients. Your article works against you.

You need an article which conservatives can praise, showing the American system--former nurses working for insurance companies deciding at which point each individual life will end. I used to work around them.

You need to show how it's better for the profit motive to make these decions, instead of a system elected by the people to do so.
