Top Gun 2 is gearing up to begin filming this summer. This is really happening and it's time to accept that fact. Talk of a possible Top Gunsequel has been brewing for a very long time, but things never really got going. However, starting last year, talks started getting serious and Tom Cruise decided to make it his next official project, following Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which is set to hit theaters on July 27. It looks like he'll be hopping straight from the press tour for that movie to Top Gun 2, as a new report reveals that the studio hopes to begin filming on the sequel in July.

Paramount and Skydance Productions are said to be getting production going on Top Gun 2, which is officially titled Maverick, by July, which should give them just enough time to get the movie finished. They've already set a release date for July 12, 2019, meaning that they will have about a year from start to finish in order to meet that release date. That's not uncommon, but with a movie this big, that could be somewhat tight. Either way, it looks like this long-awaited sequel is finally getting made and has been pegged as a major summer blockbuster for next year. More than 30 years later, Maverick is going to be back in action.

Joseph Kosinski has been tapped to directedthis Top Gun sequel. He previously worked with Tom Cruise on Oblivion. That movie didn't quite do what the studio had hoped at the box office, and it wasn't exactly a critical hit either, but Cruise apparently feels he's got a good movie in him. There's no way Cruise, who will be 56-years-old by the time this movie hits theaters, would trust a sequel like this to someone he didn't fully believe in. Kosinski is also known for directing 2010's Tron: Legacy, which also didn't do quite what Disney was hoping it would do at the time. Though, there were talks of making his version of Tron 3 for quite some time, which never materialized.

Actual plot details are mostly being kept under wraps, but we know that Top Gun 2 is going to be, as one would hope, about aviators piloting big, fast, dangerous jets in a modern world. Val Kilmer has expressed his desire to return as Ice Man in the sequel, but it's unclear at the present time if he's actually going to make an appearance. It's also up in the air as to whether or not we're going to get another volleyball scene, but don't bet on it.

With production kicking off soon, we should be hearing word on casting in the relatively near future. So we'll know who is going to join up with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Mavericksooner rather than later. The original Top Gunwas released in 1986 and grossed $356 million at the box office. When inflation is accounted for, that makes it a massive hit. Can Paramount and Skydance really expect audiences to turn up for a sequel all these years later? We'll find out next year. This news comes to us courtesy of Omega Underground.

So is this movie going to star cruise and miscaviage going around and scientologing everything?

I predict he'll die doing something stupid and ruining another jet..there will be explosions and ejections! Final ejection notice!

I loved the original when I was a kid. Seriously one of my favorite movies.

Not sure how this will work out. Hope it's not a total bust.

Its a sequel of a decades old movie. The chance of it being any good is slim.

They just want you to buy the ticket, they dont care about the product quality.

Tom Cruise has made some quality action movies in the last decade. I have high hopes, all they need is a good script. Like aliens vs predator plus tom cruise.

Cruise has gotten better over the last ten years.

If I'm not mistaken didn't he fall off a plane in his last movie and fracture his leg? Talk about climbing back on the horse!

Yeah...... Independence Day didn't turn out good at all.

Judging by the director involved, it's gonna suck lol. Regardless, this is kind of a tough nut to crack as Top Gun is such an iconic film.

Part of the reason Top Gun works extremely well is the backdrop. You had Libyan SU-22s get into a dogfight with F-14s a few years before Top Gun is made. Cold War tensions. 80s drum beats and synth sounds. There was societal adoration for the 80s era go getter type who didn't fear going out and getting burned just to get what he wanted (even to the point of extreme homoeroticism). Even if they were not a Maverick playboy type, they were a Rocky or Karate Kid.

Some of these things don't resonate today. The F-14 is retired, obviously. People nowadays listen to less dynamic music that you can't really set to an 80s montage. Go-getters aren't as celebrated and the playboy type isn't going out as much due to economic woes and social media. There's a different feeling in the air.

I guess to make a Top Gun 2 work, the dogfight needs to be based on some "No Fly Zone" over an unlisted/unspecified country (Syria, obviously). You wouldn't have the sexy alpha bird F-14 Tomcat so you gotta play with the F-18 Super Hornet, which is a more 'geeky' type plane with all of its modern electronic equipment and sleek appearance. But it's still a tough cool bird. So, the thing is....How do you sell that image as an icon like you did with the F-14?

My take is that society is more collective nowadays, so it can't be the lone F-14 and/or it's wingman. It's gotta be like multiple F-18s...four of them, I think. That's what makes the Blue Angels work. So, that means no more lone wolf Maverick type ( don't try to copy or outdo the original, be original). Just like the modern NBA, people are more buddy-buddy. In that sense, it needs to be about multiple characters as they compete and work together.

Today's scenario isn't East vs. West with two sides pointing guns at one another at every corner. Instead, you're dealing with insurgents on the ground, escorting, possible hostile aircraft, possible SAMs, chain of command pressuring you. To remedy that, the characters would need to function as a team than as a "Maverick doing that pilot shit".

The romance aspect needs to be tacked back on as well. Even if there isn't a romance in the film, the original Top Gun was filmed like a romance film with the sunsets, blue and orange lights, silhouettes, etc. That's timeless so a TG2 needs to capture that.

Maybe make the music like Drive. 80s synth pop. It's modern but captures the 80s. You can throw in Danger Zone for kicks as well.

I dunno. Just my two cents.

Dude... I would totally just go retro with the 80s music. Bring that shit back. People still love Kenny Loggins.

Well written post. I pretty much said the same thing when I said aliens vs predator.

I didn't recognize the director so I looked him up. I don't adore any of the few movies he's made but Oblivion is decent as was the fire fighter Josh Brolin movie.

Top Gun 2: Will Kelly McGillis return for Top Gun Maverick with Tom Cruise?

So instead of flying fighter jets, it will be about getting into the exit lane on the freeway at the last minute, and parking the Cadillac Escalade in a compact-only spot at the mall? The lady behind the counter at the DMV is the love interest?

I've got a feeling it won't do that well. Sequels are very very rarely as good as the root story and now he's older than any fighter pilot since the jet age.

He's gotta be flying F22s or F35s. Where's the suspense in that?
