This has been a really wonderful season.

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is prop betting? How does it differ from ordinary betting?

Hoping this will get through the boating season......

In gambling, a "proposition bet" (prop bet, prop, novelty, or a side bet) is a bet made regarding the occurrence or non-occurrence during a game (usually a gambling game) of an event not directly affecting the game's final outcome.

Proposition bets in sports are differentiated from the general bets for or against a particular team or regarding the total number of points scored. Traditionally, proposition bets can be made on outcomes such as the number of strikeouts a pitcher will accumulate in a baseball game, whether a non-offensive player will score in an American football game, which team will score the first points of the game,[1] the discipline record of teams in a match, the timing of certain events, the number of specific events per team or in the entire match, realistically any statistically discrete event contained in a match or game could be bet on.

They're big in the Superbowl, bets like how long will the National Anthem be? What color/flavor of Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach?

In a way.....glad I didn't ever have disposable income until about a month before I found out my wife was pregnant...... Didn't have time or enough money to create any bad habits.

So, IOW, prop bets are what Blazers Broadcasting does before the start of every Trail Blazers game.

Would be shocked if he's the only one who has done this.

This is the side effect of legalizing gambling that Silver shoulf have anticipated.

The side effect of legalized gambling is that this stuff can be tracked and sniffed out. Prior, when all the bets were under the table, this stuff was happening, but bets weren't being compiled crossed bookies and ran through software to identify suspicious trends.

There is no way to 100% prevent fraud, not just in sports betting, but in many aspects of life.

I would argue that legalizing sports gambling has made things like this easier to find.
Eh, i dont agree. The legalization is gambling isn't rooted in some magnanimous effort to clean up the game.

agree, they actually are incorporating gambling into their marketing approach & strategies.

I never said it was.

Personally, I don't enjoy sports gambling, especially with teams that I love. Turns a nice win into a loss if they don't cover the point spread.

My hope is that he was pressured into doing this.

If this scheme is something him and his friends cooked up he's absolutely fumbled millions of dollars because he was on his way to earning a full time contract.

Assuming he legit threw games for bets - even if its only friends benefiting or such and not him directly - Yeah he needs some sort of a lifetime ban or somethin very close. Not sure what any other realistic option the NBA could even have of a different length.

Yes Pete Rose got the lifetime ban and he was a heck of a lot bigger name than Jontay.

If the NBA doesn't throw a huge hammer down they open up a risk of other players considering doing it. They need to make him an example. Can't really think of a worse thing for the integrity of the game - steroids give you an edge but your still trying to win. Sitting out games to get an under is shocking - even Pete Rose always claimed he only bet to win.

I never thought we'd have an NBA player attempt this as they have such massive contracts doesn't seem worth the risk. I'd imagine there have been multiple or many college instances of this happening though but probably most were not caught. Smart how the NBA has been using analytics to search for this - that might be a big deterrent as well.

Legalization of gambling and the NBA pushing it is primarily to grab dollars.

But I do think its a very good point that the legalization, monitoring, analytics, additional information could make finding these cases easier. So no I don't think this is an example of a side effect of more betting legalization. Might have been more of these cases years ago that just never got found. I can't imagine Tim Donaghy and now Jontay Porter are the only ones in NBA history to have been involved with bets.

So, are those the only times people were making bets on his props? Did he ever cover his props? Possibly someone close to him with specific knowledge of his health was conspiring with others without his knowledge? I really hope so.

No wonder Michael Porter Jr. didn't attend the mandatory press conference last night.

Oh, no doubt the legalization of gambling, alcohol, marijuana, etc is about money more than anything else.

Your assertion that a player being involved in some sort of point shaving or betting maniuplation is correlated to it becoming legal is I think where SPD and I would disagree.
