Trade Deadline Predictions

That works salary wise, but other bits and pieces would be required to make it worth it to POR and SAC as they would be gift wrapping a much improved backcourt to CLE. A 3-guard rotation of Thomas, Hill and C.J. would be perfect for CLE.

I agree that Cleveland would really be making out. I suggest that Crowder go to Portland instead of Frye. And that Cleveland has to give up their Brooklyn pick to Sacramento to compensate for them having to take Leonard and their own pick to Portland.

Now is the time for Neil to make a move on some big trades... the team has been winning so our players are more desirable. Trade CJ for Kevin Love, Nurk + salary filler for DeAndre. Starting 5: Dame-Turner-Aminu-Love-DeAndre... that looks like a true contender to me. And I think both trades are there if Neil wants them. The worse thing that can happen is to be fooled by the recent success and stand pat... this roster is talented but mismatched. Strike while the iron is hot Neil!
I actually think Olshey might be trying to trade Nurk for Jordan. I think he has already decided he is not going to re-sign Nurk and needs to act now to avoid losing him for nothing. Olshey does not want to make another signing mistake; he can't take a chance on signing Nurk for 12-15 million a year and then maybe not getting consistency and effort.
I think CJ and Nurk should be the guys going out, with hopefully Leonard and/or Harkless also. I don't think we should be trading guys like Davis, Aminu, Napier, Collins and Connaughton. These guys are ballers and all play defense.

BTW, I am not necessarily advocating the Love or Jordan trades, but I do think CJ and Nurk need to go; hopefully we can find good compensation for both.

I agree! I'm prepared for one of our 3 core players to get traded and I think it will be Nurk. The Clippers will have to take Turner though.

Having a little more trade machine fun. How would this need to be adjusted to make sense for all teams involved?

upload_2018-1-25_10-17-29.png

  • Blazers convert CJ/Aminu/Davis into Love and Middleton. Obviously an upgraded lineup--surely too much so to be realistic.
  • Cavs replace problem-child KLove and unused prospect Zizic into Williams, Aminu, and Davis. Williams replaces Love's scoring, Davis his rebounding and hustle, and Aminu provides comparable 3-point shooting. Davis and Aminu also upgrade Cleveland's defense.
  • Milwaukee adds Jordan's defense/rebounding to their starting lineup at the cost of Middleton and the question mark that is Jabari Parker. They might need more in this deal.
  • Clippers jumpstart their rebuild by replacing Williams with a younger (and signed long-term) SG in CJ, getting a couple other lottery tickets in Parker and Zizic. They would have to hope that Parker and Griffin could play in the frontcourt together.
Help me out with this--what other holes exist that I haven't identified? Would the Blazers including Shabazz and/or Vonleh help with any of those? Obviously we're not submitting this to the Blazers FO, but it'd be cool to craft a crowd-sourced deal that actually makes sense.

LOL, the Bucks get totally raped there.

Understood--although supposedly Middleton/Parker for DJ was a deal being discussed/considered. Would Vonleh and our 2018 #1 coming their way make it better? If not that, what might you recommend to balance it out?

Bucks would need picks if they're giving up two of their best three assets like that and only getting an older guy back who is a possible rental. I think that's a fair deal for us and a great one for the Clippers. Cavs probably don't get much better but may consider it.

How about this?

Gets Portland out of the tax. The third year of Thomas' contract is non-guaranteed so it shaves a year off of the salary too. Portland gets to evaluate two young guys in Willy & Dotson. Willy has more talent, but Dotson is a shooter (or was in college). He may be able to fill in that AC role we have been missing.

NYK gets two talented players who are wasting away on our bench. I think Harkless would play hard in NY & they would get the best player.

Oooh I like Hernangomez. He's probably just as good as Nurk, just underused. I'd do that trade in a heartbeat.

Something tells me our bench players are no longer gonna get All-Star Kevin Love

Wait, there was a Middleton+Jabari for DJ deal considered? When was this?

Part of the challenge of trading for Deandre Jordan is that the Clippers are just slightly under the tax line and will most likely not be willing to take on any more salary than what they send out. Deandre makes $22,642,350. Blazers will probably have to be willing to go further into the tax.

Here's a potential trade that works out financially -

If the Blazers do something like this, look for them to make a separate trade to dump $4M so they can get under the tax line.

With a 3 for 1 trade, they would have to sign 2 additional players too. As a result, they would have to dump closer to $5M to get under the tax line.

I've never been as vehemently against acquiring a percieved "star" as I am against getting DeAndre Jordan.

Idk why people are discussing CJ as a hypothetical trade candidate since there's 0 chance he gets traded.

“Perceived” star??? He has been on All NBA team for 3 straight seasons, and was All NBA first team 2 years ago... he currently leads league in rebounding at 15 per game, and fg % at almost 70%... u are delusional bro... stop judging with emotion and use fact and logic... unbelievable

Okay? I'm not using any emotion. I'm using fact and logic. He's a perceived star because he used to be one, but no longer plays at the level of one, yet fans haven't caught on.

Won't be close this year, as his position has gotten better while he's gotten worse. His defense has taken a HUGE step back this year, and I mean HUGE. I can being stats into this of you're too lazy to do the research. His FG% is good, but thats because he only shoots within 3 feet. A good finisher at the rim doesn't make him a good offensive player. Get past the name. Get past his previous production and see the decline that's already happening.

Right now, he's an above average but not great defender and an average offensive C (His FT%... yikes). Athleticism is the first thing to decline, and thats what his entire game is based off of.
So he's only going to get worse but will still command at least 3 years at $25M a year. In one or two years, he'll be no better than Tristan Thompson, while having $50-$75M remaining his contract.

I wonder if getting Kevin Love here would give us a shit at landing Klay Thompson through sign-and-trade in 2019? Play and K-love are still tight, and it started all here. I could see Play wanting to move black up here for a fresh challenge.

If we could give up anything outside of our core 3 for Love (Aminu, Davis, Napier, Harkless, pick?) Then maybe we could flip some salary to a team with cap space with picks to GSW in a 3-way S&T? GSW likely won't be able to keep all four of their big four due to financial reasons so that solves their woes and gets them a good return for a a FA departure.

Lillard
McCollum
Thompson
Love
Nurkic

That's a championship lineup.

Mavs have put Wes Mathews on the block for a first round pick.....he has a player option next season...they're blowing it up

Wait, what? What would we be giving up for Klay? And how would we afford it

Collins will be the real center for the Blazers future. Not Nurkic.

Collins will be a PF next to Nurkic hopefully for years to come

Yeah it’s not that complicated but some still can’t figure it out.

Collins will never be a full time center in the NBA. That’s not a knock, he just has traits that need to be taken advantage of elsewhere. Eventually he can play center against certain teams, but he’ll always be best utilized at power forward. You don’t stick a guy that provides his defensive versatility at center. Look at Anthony Davis. When you have a seven footer with that kind of agility and shot making ability, you create a lot more mismatches at PF. stick him at center, and yeah, he’ll be quicker than most, but he’ll also often be overpowered. Even after he gets bigger, does anyone actually see him banging with a Demarcus Cousins? I don’t, but maybe that’s just me.

My hunch is our inquiry into Jordan is more as a 3rd team/ facilitator, than it is in actually acquiring him.
Two hypotheticals...
We've had discussions with both Cleveland and Milwaukee. Both want Jordan, but are not quite a 1-1 trade match with the clippers. Enter us to help find a solution.

I think Nurkic gets traded but either way m fine with it.
you wish he gets traded...
