I doubt he signs with us for that amount. He maybe signing for a discount for the ring.

I was thinking Blazers might throw a 2-3mill/year for 2-3 years at him. It would have got his attention. He's taking a big risk, but is also probably confident in his abilities.

What's to stop Cleveland's GM from saying, "We'll trade you these two scrubs for a couple 2nd round picks. Superficially, it might sound like we're doing it as a favor so you don't extend Delly a contract, but obviously that's not allowed in the new CBA." With an over-the-air wink wink, of course.

If the NBPA found out about this such as an unknown tape recording it would be a huge problem and cost both GM's their job. They aren't risking that for 2nd round picks or offers to Delly.

There's a thing called the "circumvention" clause. If the NBA thinks that your transaction is trying to circumvent the CBA, they nix it.

That was documented, wasn't it? My example specifically and explicitly said we're not allowed to do this under the CBA (wink wink), which makes it extremely difficult if not impossible to police. Saying one thing while meaning another is an easy way to circumvent such rules.

I don't believe thats how GM's do business. Whats to stop one party from taking the picks then offering Delly a contract afterwards? There is nothing binding about this supposed wink wink agreement. I don't think thats how GM's do deals. Your basically describing price fixing from an employer. Beyond the NBA's own rules there could be major labor law violations.

Why would Delly happily go along with this? If we were in discussions to pay him $4 million per year then he jumps at signing an offer paying him a third of that price? That doesn't make any sense.

Although with Kyrie healthy, Mo signed as the backup PG, Shumpert at SG, JR Smith likely returning at backup SG Delly won't have a "defined role". Its a big gamble if he left money on the table for a guy who has earned the minimum salary one season.

That's easy: trust. Not easily earned, but easily lost. You've got a small circle of people you're working with as a NBA GM. You don't really want to eliminate 3% of your future trade partners over something like that, even if they can't come out and say why.

Everyone does business like that. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
