I was an Explorer Scout and we blazed trails all the time, had nothing to do with settlers heading west. You can be a TrailBlazer i developing products or service's too.
Romans used slaves and threw people to the lions, should they tear down the Coliseum, nope.
Just to be clear, I am in complete agreement with you.

The two men who named Portland. One was from Boston, the other, Portland Maine. Flipped a coin for naming rights. Were they slave owners? Because they surely were Trailblazers. And Blacks were trailblazing to the West to find freedom, and a better way of life. Yes The Constitution of the original settlers of Oregon, was horrid ,and built on an ideal of white supremacy. But Oregon, specifically Portland has trailblazed an idea of progressive thinking, that continues to work towards inclusiveness. The mission ain't done. Far from it, but it's on the way. Better than many other places , Trailblazing a path if you will. I just think the name means so many things. They are not the Portland Lewis', or Clarks. I don't feel Trailblazers is comparable to Redskins, which was truly a derogatory name for Native Americans. I mean if you're gonna go that deep into the name Traiblazers, how many Cowboys, were racist? Or Steelers? Not all people "Trailblazing to the West were Racist. Buffalo Soldiers were Trailblazers. Just saying.

thought, if we legit started hating on the Free Agent idea, then people could actually chant antiFA.....

The Portland Wokies

The Portland /r/pol's

The Portland Reeeeeee

The Portland Precinct-A-Blazers

ok im out of ideas.

If they change the name on some BS like that I hope the team ends up in Seattle as the SuperSonics.

Then I would cease to watch NBA ever again.

I just see the name as vague, since all kinds of people were Trailblazers. Don't Worry. I think the Sarge was just being a Smarty Pants.

I don't think the native american or black american communities take offense with the term "Trailblazers" even though both groups were either misled or compelled to be part of the western North American exploration. Native Pacific Northwest american's may eventually voice concerns with the occupation and extermination that consequentially was enabled by those initial trailblazers. It would be good if our team did research and poll native and black americans to make sure they're good with the team name. Right now though native americans just want blatantly bigoted terms like "Redskins" and ignorant ones like "Indians" to be changed. I think those requests are pretty conservative since redskin is an ethnic slur and indian is just completely inaccurate due to the fact that India is 7ooo miles from North America. I just don't see the decimated population of 5 million Native Americans successfully demanding things be made right and I think changing the name Trailblazers would come after that. Actually I think even if the 2% of the U.S. population that natives make up were given absolute control and power over this land they wouldn't care about the term trailblazer.

Just so long as it's not the Portland Proud Boys:

Trust that you saw the full video of this now, showing that right before it the old guy had been knocked over, and that the state trooper (while making the universal 'ok' gesture) clearly verbally asked him 'are you okay?' - to which the old guy says 'yes, I'm good'. Gross character assassination comes from edited clips on twitter.

I haven’t seen it, and would love to

If the team changed their name to the Portland Blazed, would it be offensive to use a Bill Walton logo for the team?

As per Lewis & Clark College, the Pios

Portland Pioneers

but i agree with an earlier post, IF it were deemed necessary to change, go with “Blazers” and nothing really has to change.

Then there’s the Portland Riptides...and “Rip City” gains new meaning :)

Portland Asterix

since we’ll win the championship in a couple of months!

This is bound to be a thread where people go off, but I’m legitimately curious.

with all of the uproar about sports teams names, statues of figures who used slaves and righting the wrongs of our past, I have a couple of questions.

1. The people who “blazed a trail” to Oregon, used slaves. So, should the Trailblazers rename if some people demand it?

2. what do you think would be a good name if that happens at some point?

PLEASE try and keep this to legit answers.
I remember the naming contest. I was seriously disappointed with the new name at first. But then it grew and grew on me until I now feel that we have the best name in the whole damned NBA. They'll rename it over my dead body.

The Portland Weird

You can't use anything related to a human as all humans have something bad, or something they object to. So, you have to pick an inanimate object (PETA will take out the bucks [sexist anyway], etc.) or some state of mind.

I think serious consideration will and should be given to changing it from Portland to Oregon,
e.g. the Oregon Oaks

I genuinely am surprised the number of Blazer fans that don't realize Trail Blazers is 2 words... not one. We're the Portland Trail Blazers... Not Portland Trailblazers <shrug>

not having a racist mascot or logo helps the Blazers’ cause a lot in keeping their name, probably more so than if they’d gone with Pioneers instead.

I would quite like it if they took the moniker of their sister team, the Portland Fire, after signing Sabrina Ionescu as the first woman to play in the NBA ...

the Portland Homeless
the Portland SJW's
