Merritt Paulson group the next owner of the Blazers?

Somehow, I've overlooked the local son of the former Secretary of the U.S. Treasury as a possible future Blazers owner. Maybe because he seems so passionate about his Major League Soccer enterprise. Maybe because I'd never viewed him as someone willing to take the leap from soccer and minor league baseball enterprises into the migraine that is a $425-million NBA purchase. The strategists suggested that Paulson, and his father, Henry, have the financial resources, political clout and connections to put together a dynamite ownership group. It would have a local focus. They believe the ownership group would also include a prominent former Trail Blazer. The group, they assured me, would not only be focused on buying the Blazers, but full development of the Rose Quarter as an entertainment district

Paulson has worked for the NBA league office under commissioner David Stern, and he hired smart basketball people such as former Blazers executive Mike Golub as the Timbers chief operating officer. I could imagine Paulson courtside at the Rose Garden, on his feet after a poor call barking at the officials, with the rest of the city on its feet woofing with him. Just ask the Timbers Army. And in that, he's exactly the kind of owner Portland would embrace, but again, the Blazers aren't for sale. Are they?

Oh! Oh! Canzano has a theory!

barfo

3 lobbyists asked Canzano to float a trial balloon in a column to advocate that the Timbers owner buy the Blazers. When Canzano phoned owner Merritt Paulson, he claimed no interest. This leaves the mystery of who is paying the lobbyists for this campaign.

Canzano once again tells us that he thinks he's running the team, chirping from his peanut perch in a cage lined with his articles to catch his droppings. In 40 years of reading NBA articles, I've never seen a reporter who thinks he's the owner's equal.

...I felt a profound disappointment for the city and Blazers fans when he stated he was not selling. Nothing personal. Just disappointed...By the very nature of my job, and Allen's ownership of the most popular major league team in this state, we're not going to see eye to eye. He's "Idea Man." I have my own ideas. That's never going to amount to a friendship.

I'm all for it. Time for a clean slate.

New ownership.

New Management.

New training staff.

New head coach.

New team.

Let's do this!

Snap your fingers, say Abra Cadabra, and wait for $400 million to appear on your hand. Until then, I'm going to deal with the reality of building this team.

This new guy Paulson is worth a lot less than Starbucks owner Howard Schultz. I can't wait to see the impoverished team of scrappy hard luck co-owners he finds and their one big trade per decade, like the Sonics.

How well has Paul's infinite cash worked out for us?

It's made small market fans pretentious in their expectations. Wait till you experience a normal small town ownership group. You'll be howling for Paul, but he'll be dead.

It's a great theory, but the Blazers aren't for sale according to every single person in the organization. Love for that to happen though

The article doesn't say they're secretly for sale. It's just a catchy thread title. Canzano says he WISHES they were for sale.

An entire universe of sports stories to write a column about and Canzano goes with, "Let's make some stuff up about a hypothetical sale of the Blazers, despite the fact that that the owner has said they're not for sale, to somebody who says they aren't interested in buying the team anyway." Classic Canzano.

I'm all for the idea of a sale, but this is just so much Cazano fishing expedition ... "secret sale," that's priceless; whenever any of the principals in the column get asked about this, the round of denials can just be used for more column fodder a couple of weeks from now.

Hopefully a kid develops cancer soon so JC can get back to writing heart-warming stories about it.

Gimme ten years and I'll have my first bil by then. I'll think of buying them if they're for sale then.

For those of you 'secretly' for it, what do you think would be the big differences between he and Paul, as majority owner? I don't know much about this guy.

Canzano blatantly stirring the pot.

It's a slow news day in the world of sports and this is a perfect example of that.

I have unnamed sources that tell me that Canzano secretly has a crush on Jason Quick.

I have inside sources that say Chad Buchanan plays more Call Of Duty than he does evaluating talent.

All new posters in this lame ass forum.

I wish the team was for sale along with the arena. That Bill Gallacher bought them both, sent the Blazers to Seattle and brought the NHL to Portland. A man can dream.

You're telling him not to be mean spirited...... As you tell him to stay the fuck away..... Something is off here

When did I tell him to not be mean spirited? I was not trying to be mean spirited. His last several posts have been mostly about the shitty people in the forum, and the fact we all need to go. If he doesn't like it, why is he posting here? Especially just to blast the members of the forum.

Also, Dear Mods,

The forum posts are supposed to be about the topic, not the poster (s). How is "All new posters in this lame ass forum" as an entire post not a violation?
