Good on them for standing up for their child in the face of ignorance and prejudice.
See, that's the ignorance.
She is a girl, and was born that way.
Wait, what...did I miss something? The boy in question was born a girl?
Like it or not, school isn't just about this person. It's about how they fit into the group. They may want to use the girls' bathroom, but how does it make other girls feel?
The solution is simple: just have them use a private bathroom I'm sure is at the school.
I get the larger argument: your psychology may not match your biology. However, it's not up to the school or the community to adjust to that condition, rather the individual. I feel sorry for this kid, but as a wise philosopher once said, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one.
Yep, you missed it.
It's why she dresses as a girl, her passport says female, etc.
The other kids don't give a shit. Nobody has complained. The school is making a huge error in judgment. And the only one actually being hurt is the girl.
Why does the state issued document recognize him as a girl? because the parents say so? What does his birth certificate say?
You can't reason your way out of the truth, sorry.
She's a girl. She is what she looks like (ALL THE TIME).

She's a girl. She is what she looks like (ALL THE TIME).
So if I commit to dress like a girl for the rest of my life, I am a female?
Nevermind all of the natural pieces that indicate otherwise (uh, like the existence of a penis and all other male sexual organs and all other items that make me a male)?
You can't "REASON" a way out of a penis and testicles. Sorry.
Ignorance is bliss, apparently.
It isn't about committing to wearing anything.
It's WHY.
Why? Why was he born with a penis and other male parts? Why does he still have a penis? I'm cool with people being what/who they want. But like his/her parents have a right to protect their child, other parents have rights to protect my child, and the school has the right to protect its' students. The school found what I'd consider a fair option for everyone.
Nobody is complaining about the girl using the girl's bathroom. Transgender girls have been using girls bathrooms for decades and it's no big deal.
There's nothing to protect anyone from, other than really making this girl feel bad.
THat's it, I'm going back to high school and taking showers in the girls locker room to better experess myself.
I had my bell rung during a football practice my junior year. On my way to get checked out, I was so loopy I walked into the girls' locker room where the soccer team and cheerleaders had finished up and were getting dressed/showering.
There were the usual screams and curses by the girls as they rushed to cover up. I simply stood dumbfounded in the middle of the room asking what they were doing in the men's locker room.
One of my friends grabbed my arm and led me out of the locker room yelling at me the entire time. I kept looking at her curiously. She realized something wasn't right with me, so she went down to get one of my coaches. They then took me into the boys locker room and the training room to get checked out. I was later diagnosed with a concussion.
To this day, no matter how many apologies I give or no matter how many times I tell the story, almost no one believes me that I didn't walk into the girls' locker room intentionally.

For those that want the school to provide separate facilities for the boy (sorry Denny, but girls don't have penises), you should know that is a problem for existing school buildings.
If the voters of a school district want to provide transgender bathrooms in a new school, that's ok. Restrooms are expensive, but if the majority say that's what they want, that's what the school district should build. (Keep in mind that one transgender facility probably isn't going to do it. In elementary schools, the kids tend to move to different wings as they progress through school. So, the you would need to build 2-3, or more, of these to accommodate that movement.) Once the transgender student moves on to middle school, those restrooms either are taken out of service, so they don't require daily service, or they are a burden on the custodial staff. (Unless another transgender student comes into the elementary before the first one leaves.
In existing buildings, the number of boy's and girl's restrooms is set relative to the number of boys and girls at the school. To take one of a pair of gang restrooms out of service to accommodate one person will leave in insufficient number of stalls/urinals to service the school population. Saying to just add one is problematic. In an existing building, the new facilities need to be located near hot and cold water supplies, and waste piping. If there is no easy location, then the floor of the building has to be torn up to get to the waste piping. Most older schools have one, sometimes two, one-hole staff restrooms. Most elementary schools have at least 20 staff, with the teachers having a common time to use the facilities (between class times.) Taking one of the staff restrooms to service one student is a problem.

Some girls do have penises. That's why they are transgendered.

I find it odd that we're calling this little boy a "girl" because that's how he identifies? So now we're stereotyping behaviors, behaviors this little boy follows, as being "girl" behavior?
I know women who partake in more "manly" things than most men, but clearly, they are still women and identify themselves as women. These women actually have the anatomy/physiology of a woman.
It's not just about behavior, though. Allegedly, Coy "self-identified" as a girl as early as Coy was able to speak, and stated at the age of 4 that, "something is wrong with my body". This, by the way, is the part that my ignorant brain has difficulty understanding. Perhaps it's different when one is a triplet, but I have yet to meet the 4-year-old that is self-aware enough--and comprehends gender differences well-enough--to be able to determine that he or she should be one gender or the other.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has had a similar approach in place for almost a decade. Our policy has helped transgender students feel comfortable, rather that isolated, at school. We made sure that students can use bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity. We have helped them join the appropriate gym classes and sports teams.
And we have watched these students thrive.
