President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired FBI Director James Comey after his attorney general and deputy attorney general recommended his removal.

"The FBI is one of our nation's most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement," Trump said in a statement.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said shortly before 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday that Comey was "notified a short time ago," but declined to say how Comey was notified. Comey's dismissal took effect immediately.

Spicer told reporters that Comey "accepted the recommendation of the deputy attorney general and the attorney general," who both recommended Comey's "dismissal."

This is reminds me of something from 1973. Just saying.

Graham supports Trump firing of FBI director Comey

Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is leading one of four investigations into Russia's interference in the 2016 election, said Tuesday he supports President Donald Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

"Given the recent controversies surrounding the director, I believe a fresh start will serve the FBI and the nation well," Graham said in a statement Tuesday. "I encourage the President to select the most qualified professional available who will serve our nation's interests."

Members of the Senate judiciary committee, including Graham, pressed Comey last week on his handling of the case surrounding Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Comey testified that he unveiled the results of the FBI's Clinton email probe because he felt like the independence of the FBI would appear to be compromised by Bill Clinton's meeting a month earlier with then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Archibald Cox was the special prosecutor, not the head of the FBI. Not a similar situation at all.

Cox didn't work for Nixon. Comey did work for Trump.
