“There’s Been a Slightly Hysterical Tone About Race”
Author Mark Lilla thinks Democrats’ focus on identity politics is destroying the party.

On this week’s episode of my podcast, I Have to Ask, I spoke with Mark Lilla, a professor of the humanities at Columbia University and the author of a new book, The Once and Future Liberal: After Identity Politics. Lilla is known for his writing on history and political philosophy; in his latest book, he pins many of the troubles of the Democratic Party on the rise of identity politics. He argues that Americans have become hostile to the way the left speaks and writes and that “by the 1980s [identity politics] had given way to a pseudo-politics of self-regard and increasingly narrow and exclusionary self-definition that is now cultivated in our colleges and universities.” “The main result,” he writes, “has been to turn young people back onto themselves, rather than turning them outward toward the wider world.”

I assumed that's what you meant by "complementary collaboration," since you dropped into a discussion of racialism, but now you seem not to be discussing racialism at all.

Oh I think you got it. I simply suggested an attitude adjustment might be in order since you seem to feel a need to discuss racialism, especially where it does not need to be a focal point.

Finally, an end to racism. I think this board has also eliminated fascism and homophobia.

Let's move on to bigger fish. Cancer. I say nobody dies of cancer. Who's with me?

Totally agree, no one dies from pornography. Although a few of us have gone blind.

i've heard anecdotes of fur in odd places, hands down more disturbing than simple blindness that might be more easily explained away. at least as a contributing factor.

I'd rather have a werewolf hand than be blind.

President Trump on Monday said he announced his pardon of former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio as Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas because he “assumed the ratings would be far higher.”

“In the middle of a hurricane, even though it was a Friday evening, I assumed the ratings would be far higher than they would be normally,” Trump said during a press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. “You know, the hurricane was just starting.”

I haven't given one shit that people say he is bad. I agree. What more do you want? you want me to completely be outrageous like you and go further in my dislike for trump? I don't hate people that much, sorry. I don't like him, I am not with him, that's that. Like I said the second somebody goes crazy and calls him a fascist that's where I draw the line because that's an absurd statement to make. Or that he is racist or with Russia. There is absolutely no proof of any of that. I am just being objective. I don't think Obama deserved some of the shit he got as well, doesn't mean I love him. I don't trust these politicians because they have proven they are full of shit each time. Democrat or Republican.

I wouldn't make it okay for these people to get bombed, I mean I guess you are cool with these innocent kids, women, dudes, getting bombed just as long as the terrorist is taken out in the process. Just as long as you aren't there right? ignorance is bliss. I just know I wouldn't make that okay, shit should never be okay especially under an administration that wanted to bullshit me about peace and coming together. Can't say that while killing thousands of innocent people in the middle east under your watch. Obviously we never gave a fuck about our troops either, which explains the suicide rate. These politicians use them. That's it. Why are we still in the middle east? explain that. 16 almost 17 years over there. Open your eyes a bit

What's your definition of fascism? Lots of people don't even know what it is but spout it. The truth is we already have fascism in this country and it's been rising and Rising.

often capitalized: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

There is the definition. People throw the word around too much and water it down. When I think of fascism I think of Nazi Germany and we are no where near that

Article III Section II

Eighth amendment

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

In my view, the judge is the one that needs to be put on trial. First for attempting to block the sheriff from upholding his oath of office in enforcing the laws of the United States.
Second for, denying the Sheriff due process in his attempt.

A stated reason why jury trials.

The Right to Trial by Jury Clause guarantees that a wider group of people will look at the evidence and hear both sides of the case before they make their decision. If a single judge were given the power to condemn someone to life in prison or to death, the alleged criminal could easily become the victim of corrupt judge. Supreme Court Justice Byron White put it this way:

"A right to jury trial is granted to criminal defendants in order to prevent oppression by the Government. Those who wrote our constitutions knew from history and experience that it was necessary to protect against unfounded criminal charges brought to eliminate enemies and against judges too responsive to the voice of higher authority. The framers of the constitutions strove to create an independent judiciary but insisted upon further protection against arbitrary action. Providing an accused with the right to be tried by a jury of his peers gave him an inestimable safeguard against the corrupt overzealous prosecutor and against the compliant, biased, or eccentric judge..."

You Oughta be ashamed of this post but we all know why you're not. What if the white women in his jail were denied products for their menstrual cycles?

Oh I am embarrassed my countrymen care so little about the rights of all Citizens, even the Sheriff you hate. You bitch daily about being abused, but you care not another man is denied his constitutional protection.

I read that there was a Supreme Court decision about this type of thing. Still don't like it.

I hate him because of his less than human like actions. You hate the humans he was oppressing.

The Constitution also creates courts that are allowed to interpret the Constitution per Marbury v. Madison. It seems you do not respect courts which have Article III powers and have decided a jury trial did not exist for a contempt crime. Why do you only like part of the Constitution?

They had to start somewhere.

I think that definition perfectly fits Trumps motives.

Another mis timed act by the POTUS.

Trump pardoned (and exonerated) the racist, law-breaking disgraced convicted former sheriff to please the white supremacist part of his base. He made the transgender ban official to please the homophobic evangelist part of his base. In doing so he totally disrespected law enforcement and the military, the two institutions he claims to support. Like every Trump claim, a lie. Trump supports his ego and his wealth, nothing else.

Arpaio cost the county millions in legal fees and millions more in civil suits. He ignored at least 400 reports of sexual assaults, some against children, to devote all the resources of "his" department to rounding up brown people and promoting birtherism. A deputy in the sheriff's department was quoted as saying the mistrust he built between community and police is so extreme it will not be repaired for years, if ever. He was defeated by double digits in his last election.

The heads of all the armed forces opposed a transgender ban, as did veterans' groups. The ban will cost the country millions in legal fees and probably end up overturned, unless Trump can appoint enough gay hating judges. Trump, who never served, whose family members never served, has zero military reasons for the ban, just his and his supporters' bigotry.

decided a jury trial did not exist for a contempt crime.

That is exactly why the right to a jury is called out so many times in the Constitution and the amendments. But yet a judge decides it does not apply to his court.
Think about that!

Your hate is apparent. Try finding a fondness for the rule of law as given us in the Constitution. I do, I think you might like it.

My point is that the constitution allows for the pardon -- it's the POTUS's power and it appears to be completely his discretion. I don't agree with the decision or particularly the way in which this was done. But the Constitution gives him that right. You disagree with the courts' decision that the Constitution does not provide a right to a jury trial for this contempt charge. You're free to disagree with the ruling, but the courts have the power to interpret the constitution. You have the power to muse on the constitution, but the court's word has authority, and yours does not.

Seriously???? Seriously??? You suggest a black person gain a "fondness for the rule of law as given us in the Constitution"????? Wow Marz, you truly are clueless, not to mention mindbogglingly insensitive. How many times has the rule of the law as given us by the Constitution worked for them???? Very tasteless comment. Unbelievable.
