Been saying this forever. Democrats need to come out in favor of gun rights and supporting military. Stop arguing for cutting military and start arguing to make them more efficient and effective, improving military pay and access to state of the art equipment. Then put that force to work doing good. Helping the world deal with natural disasters, reduce disease, defend schools and hospitals from extremists, etc.

Arguing against the military is insane.

Reduce violent crime and murder rates (including gun crime) by increasing access to education, healthcare, and and improved social safety net.

Stop trying to legislate people's rights away.

Problem is, Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin. All they care about is having rabid fan bases who will donate a lot of money to the DNC or RNC instead of a third party.

I completely support the military. But, you can't do those other things without taking some of the funding from the military. We have the best military in the world, but we pay to much for it. It takes up too much of our budget. Alot of that money goes into the pockets of private contractors.

Making the military more efficient and effective is just another way of saying cutting the military budget. Sounds like you are saying you want to militarize our country.

I believe in our military but there isn't enough funding for schools, social programs, etc because we are spending a big chunk of our budget on the military. Your saying spend more to make sure we are state of the art and pay solders more? With what we are spending that should already be the case. Its not because of corruption.

I am not sure where you are getting that Dems wsnt to or have legislated the rights of the right away. Its not the case.

No one is taking anyone's guns away unless they kill people with them. Its just a scare tactic by the politicians on the right to get them to fear the left.

So many moderate dems that are really being torn, as they do support military, police, and reasonable immigration reform and 2nd amendment. Seems the radicles of both left and right are trying to dominate the two parties more and more. Id say its more so with democratic party though.

I don't know where the 'center' really is, but I can guess. And when I make that guess and look at the leadership of the 2 parties, Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Schumer on the left, trump, Pence, McConnell, Ted Cruz, Bill Barr on the right, I have no doubt at all which group I think is further from the center, and it's not the D's

and when you talk about the "extremes", I'm a little unsure what you think is extreme considering you think the D's are being tugged harder in an extreme direction

but I can think of some good examples of where the two parties are trying to drag the country right now. For instance, on Covid, the D's are trying to drag the country toward mask wearing & social distancing while adhering to the best known science-based policies. On the other side, the R's are trying to drag the country into more and more irresponsible behavior while denigrating the use of masks and social distancing, and muzzling the CDC and people like Fauci for craven, corrupt destructive political reasons. There is only one side of that issue being ignorant and extreme

another example: if BLM is D, it is at least trying to drag the D's, and the country, toward racial justice. Do they over-correct and go to far sometimes? probably. But again, their goal is achieving racial justice. Is that really some kind of radical left goal? The other side of it is then the Proud Boys being R as much as BLM is D. And where do the Proud Boys want to drag the country? Yeah, toward white supremacy and violence. There is no goddamn equivalence with those two 'extremes'

the D's accept that climate change and global warming are proven science and we should do what we can to mitigate the problem. The R's think it's a hoax. The frog-like R's want to force everybody to join them in the slowly boiling pot

fuck this ubiquitous bankrupt notion of 'both-sides-do-it', both sides sinning at the same level on the opposite sides of the wall. It's bullshit.
 
I’m lowering my odds that he has it to 20/80. No one knowing anything, the chaotic fumbling of getting stories straight, the car ride and visiting veterans while he’s there, it just seems even too dumb for this administration. I’ve seen better drama at a high school.

Donald Trump is a waste of oxygen.

Hospital should let him go back to the WH. Use those hospital resources and our tax dollars on someone (anyone) worth saving.

We spend nearly 65% of our discretionary dollars on defense.

Take your nukes and shove them up all your military lobbyists asses while you're at it.

Advocating for increased gun control is included. Increasing gun control has never shown to lower violent crime or murder rates. In any country.

If course we can afford to do those things without cutting military. Medicare for All costs less (though nearly as much) than what we currently spend on Healthcare, and nearly everybody gets better care. And the 1% should pay for enough of it that the rest of us actually save money.
This would reduce violent crime and murder rates more than any gun control. And the resulting healthier population would be far more beneficial to the economy, not to mention the fact that people will not have to worry about losing healthcare if they want to start their own business.

Housing First costs less than having homeless people and further reduces violent crime and murder rates, again almost certainly by more than any gun control would. And by reducing recidivism could have a very positive impact on the economy.

There are far more efficient ways to reach our goals. Many countries have already shown how to solve these problems (or at least drastically improve on them).

But the military isn't stopping us from doing anything, even if we agree that it could be run much more efficiently.

Shifting portions of the military to more humanitarian and R&D type endevers could return ample value to the economy without cutting military jobs or funding.

But yeah, if you're going to try and attack military funding you're going to get a lot of push back.

I saw somebody talking about it earlier in the thread and just forgot to hit reply.

We do more with our military than most countries. Our military spending can give us an amazing amount of soft power and good will of we use it logically. And in doing so it can pay for itself.

We haven't been using it logically for a few decades.

Agreed. Look at what Oliver Stone said recently when speaking about military intelligence sources:

"We're at a moment in time where anything, anything about China or Russia is being broadcast loudly to the American people," Stone told Maher. "We have a very effective western media that does this all the time. You have to go back- and you have been skeptical in the past, why do we need enemies? Why do we need these enemies? Why do we want to make this into an issue? Why?"
