The Democrats all but destroyed Hawaiian culture, religion, and use of the language
The missionaries actually did that...read Michener's "Hawaii" and you'll gain more understanding of what brought down Hawaiian royalty...the biggest impact was disease and diet.

these hawaiian childrens cultural immersion programs and schools are hugely popular and were founded to counter the loss of tradition and heritage here. lingle was my governor here so was aware that republicans had held the highest state office before. she had a lt. governor named duke aiona, hawaiian and hugely popular but the austerity decision of lingle of furloughing students and teachers by cutting days in classroom to cut the budget was hugely unpopular dooming succesion of a republican governor.

I lived there 6+ years. I saw it with my own eyes.

It was the separation of church/state, public schools, truancy laws, etc., that all but killed the culture.

where and when did you live in hawaii?
edit: curious.
you mention the separation of church and state first as contributing to the cultural loss of the people. wouldn't that have occured under reformists/republicans in the annexation of the kingdom?

I lived and worked in Hawaii several times....totaled over 7 years ....it was the church and sexual contact with pox ridden Europeans that wiped out the Hawaiian people to almost the point of extinction. There is to this day a movement to succeed from the US amongst the Hawaiians...there's a waiting list for ceded lands they are supposed to receive that in the meantime has been leased to resort developers and golf courses....in the late 80s there were about 100 thousand homeless Hawaiians

the anger over the ceded lands is becoming more vocal and mainstream. popular music artists sing about it in the hawaiian language in their music. not talking hip hop but traditional slack key musicians. the local KAPA radio station in Hilo's playlist slants decidedly to this politic in there late evening music selection many nights.

Maui, Kihei

No. which party is for vouchers?

Separation of Church/State meant immersion of kids into secular schools.

The kamaaina schools may be too little too late. The whole deal proves one size doesn't fit all.

The annexation of Hawaii was a disgrace. Non natives with no business voting on the issue did.

From all the flip flopping he is doing, trump is looking more and more like a liberal these days. Maybe she is getting in on the ground floor of his progressive movement.

probably wouldn't hurt if you were to try and understand the reasoning behind it. hawaiian people have good reason to distrust the republican party.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reform_Party_of_Hawaii
can breeze through how the reform party stole the kingdom at gun point for their own purposes,(can insert greed as an adjective here without being wrong) and read how the people that stole it as the reform party morphed into the republican party after convincing president Mckinley to annex the country, forever taking away any hope of restoring the constitutional monarchy through the democratic process.
the hawaiian peoples memory of this injustice still manifests itself in public conversation here to this day. thus the power of the democratic party here.

Ok, I appreciate your inside knowledge and sense of history, especially the history. But, the lady is a Democrat which is nearly required there. So, what is my error?

Oh btw, it seems pretty odd the people would vote for Statehood given the back ground as you said. I was there in Hawaii when it officially became a State. The people seem pretty happy about it at least where I was.

Kamehameha schools were started by a hawaiian princess in 1897
vouchers weren't part of the reform parties platform when they siezed control of the kingdom.
before that they forced the Bayonet constitution upon the monarchy.
i agree with you completely about the disgrace of the annexation.

no error stated.
was only trying to help you understand one of the reasons why republicans have not done well.
Seems to me that after 60 years of oversight, taxation and governance without representation as a territory that having population based in the house of representatives and 2 members in the senate would certainly be a reason for joy.
ps-edit forgot to mention that hawaiians only make up about 10% of the population. a would bet it was a similar # in 1959
