In apartheid South Africa, the term "Black" covered everyone not totally European. There were three subgroups: Africans, "Coloured" (mixed-race), and Asian, mostly of Indian descent. In the West we would not call people from India black, we'd call them Asian.
In Cuba and Puerto Rico they use terms "white" and "black" to designate primarily European or African ancestry, but Cuban-Americans and Puerto Ricans on the mainland are all called Hispanic/Latinx. There is a large Chinese minority in Cuba; would we call them Asian? Hispanic? Asanic?
In the US "black" means any visible percentage of sub-Saharan African, even if the individual also has a lot of European and/or Native American ancestry, while in Brazil anyone with any percentage of European ancestry is called "white" although most Brazilians are at least partly African.
When I was in high school there was a very attractive and popular boy, I still remember his name, Kenny. But some girls would not date him because he was Japanese-American, still thought they were fighting World War II.
Still waiting to find out who designed me to not like my Latinx neighbors, who frankly are less obnoxious than the two families across the street who are "American".
