First, Trent has hardly played in the NBA so it's way to premature to determine what he is and isn't as an NBA player. Teams also can use one "dimensional gunners" as guys by the name of Jamal Crawford and Vinnie Johnson as well as many others come to mind.
As for a back up PG, do you not think Stotts and Olshey discuss things as to needs and plans for the season? the season is a long ways off before the final roster needs to be determined. Stotts isn't forced to use Simons as backup PG as we also have McCollum and Lillard that can be on the floor along with Simonsd to make his growth easier. We also don't know how Hezonjia is going to work out either.


Simons is for sure a gifted scorer and shooter. But he's not all that much else at the moment. The only way he gets meaningful minutes at the backup PG in the regular season is if Olshey literally forces Stott's hand by not signing ANY OTHER GUARD.
