He had to. Syria was the only spot he had in the middle east. If this pans out, he can move along and get Iraq and Libya as well, controlling the pipeline for oil. It also seems Iran has allied with him.

Whatever the case, I think America should just pull out and only support Israel and the Saudis
I thought Russia wanted the Tajikistan, Uzbekistan pipe line that leads through Turkey..Russia is not getting Iraq, Syria and Libya...ever. I still think this is a really dumb move by Putin..Turkey is not a country he wants to go to war with

And Putin first struck you as a reasonable guy.....when? His arrogance makes the Dick Cheneys of this world look reasonable....

And he doesn't seem to care. As far as I'm concerned, Russia can have Syria. Just another quagmire to get lost in. But if they do get into it with Turkey, NATO has to jump in. Hopefully Putin's arrogance has its' limits. But it doubt it....

A lot of countries rely on the Turkish pipeline and Turkey is a main tourist vacation spot for a lot of Europeans. A Russian, Turkish conflict would be a disaster

Yep. It makes me wonder what kind of cards the Tsar thinks he's holding. I think, more than anything, he's going to see how far he can push, and then hold on to whatever he can grab. It's up to the rest of the world to say stop. I'm just not sure we have the collective will unless and until he does something totally outrageous. It worked for Hitler. And Putin's predecessors. Making a grab for Turkey would certainly be a tipping point.

It reminds me of playing the game Risk....the Ottoman empire never wins that game

Proper background checks would have prevented the turkey from getting the gun.

:devilwink:

Is it really a quagmire when you don't care if your enemy is radical or not? Putin will just kill all.

The Pussy Riot movement didn't pull any punches with Putin at home...he didn't have an answer for Russian feminist Punk Rock

That's my point. Putin scares me... he's the type of dude that will use nuclear attacks if necessary.

Our next president needs to be VERY strong in order to deal with this man going forward.

It will be an impossible task by then, at the rate Putin is advancing unchallenged.

The world needs to set Putin in his place...it's not our cold war, it's Russia's own internal cold war that will get fed up with Putin. If he gets sanctions from the UN..he'll get humbled really fast. I think he's being reckless and I don't think Iran wants to ally itself with him having their own sanctions recently lifted. Doesn't make sense. Syria he can have...nobody else wants it and it's filled with ex Saddam Hussein and Gadaffi loyalists. Too much to lose for any neighboring nation to get behind a Russian stronghold in Syria.

They tried that in Afghanistan. Gotta find 'em before you can kill 'em.
Afghanistan was being supported by the USA and the terrain was mainly mountains. Obama is pulling out from giving weapons to ISIS, so he will wipe them off the face of Syria

There are a lot of new videos appearing on YouTube that show rebels in Syria firing USA made, CIA supplied TOW missiles against Syrian tanks and targets. Below are just two short examples. One report states several dozen Syrian army tanks have been destroyed just in that last couple of days.

That's why I never accept a ride from a tank driver.

I'm not a legal expert (Denny?), but I think it's pretty difficult to have sanctions imposed on a country that has veto control of the Security Council. :dunno:

Not from the UN. It's from the US, EU and other assorted countries. Almost to the point of talking semantics here, but the sanctions imposed by us and the EU aren't the same as those imposed by the UN on, say, Iraq.

Well, Russia has a veto. Of course they'll veto sanctions against themselves. Even if they didn't veto, what are they going to do? Stop selling themselves whatever?

The US, EU, and other assorted countries are UN members, FWIW.
