Twitter rumor - Blazers to deal F Gerald Wallace for picks

I agree with trading Wallace, especially if it gives Nic more opportunity, and it would give Portland the trade exception. My biggest problem was that TE was going to be used on a Carl Landry or some other 'B' player, at least according to Wheeler today on The Game. The one thing that Portland cannot do right now is trade away LMA without getting a similar player in return. I guess I don't think this team is as far from being a contender as others do, and I'd like to see what Oden's expiring $8.8 million along with Wallace's $10+ million might bring before the trade deadline.

If the rules are the same as the last CBA, trading Oden could not be combined with any other deal (so no 2 for 1) and he would lose his Bird Rights. Would be highly surprised if he gets moved.

Our last rebuilding took, what, 6 years? No thanks. Not sure I would renew my season tix if we went back to a team of rookies that are 3 years out, if that.

Different circumstances entirely. That team was full of bad actors and toxic personalities and was hopelessly cap constrained. This made getting rid of them not only advisable, but mandatory ... and usually for pennies on the dollar. It also didn't help that Steve Patterson and John Nash were shitty talent evaluators.

This team? they might actually have a guy worth building around in LMA, they aren't overloaded with bad contracts and even have some complimentary players they probably would like to keep in Nic and Wesley (and maybe Felton?)

Dumb. Wallace is our 2nd best player. When he actually was allowed to not just camp at the 3 point line on offense (basically after Nate figured out how to use him), he did great!

It's almost like a catch-22.

I'd like to keep Wallace but I don't know how much he wants to stay in Portland, especially now that we lost Roy and therefore, look less attractive as a contending team. And if we do get picks, I see us getting picks over a period of years rather than in a single year.

Though, let's say we do trade him and we do get 3 first round picks (including ours) for the 2012 draft. We'll likely have two in the late teens-early twenties (Nets, Blazers) and a top 10 pick (Orlando).

That would look like good positioning in this year's draft. I'm even wondering if we could somehow use the Nets and Blazers pick to get a borderline top 10 pick and using that to pick a decent SG? Then, perhaps trade Batum+Orlando pick for Harrison Barnes? Or use the Orlando pick to pick up a big man, keep Batum, and move up w/ the Nets and Blazers picks to pick a decent shooting guard like Lamb.

I'm an adult. I don't waste my life away on this forum all year long. It's sad and pathetic.

I am however, a big Basketball fan that lives in Portland. I would like to see this team be relevent in my lifetime. If we keep treading water as a franchise, that won't happen. Blow it up. Start over. Its the right thing to do.

I don't see trading wallace for four first rounders rebuilding. I see it as a smart move for the future. losing wallace would not catapult this team into the lottery(IMO)

If true, I wonder if Portland is still involved in this?

Rumor:

John Ireland, Lakers reporter / new announcer, says his source told him the Magic will trade Dwight Howard to the Nets if no other offers come, really soon, even a 90% chance it will happen tomorrow.

Says, these are the same sources that confirmed Stephen A. Smith's news that LeBron and Bosh would join Miami last year.

I hate to overvalue one preseason game against a lousy team, but after what I saw last night it seems like GW is going to be the heart and soul of this Blazers team this year. Crash will have a lot more value on helping to build the post-Roy era and passing the torch than some draft picks down the road. I hope GW isn't getting traded.

And for shitty draft picks to boot.

Factor in his age and the amount of picks I think it would have been a good move.

We have three players to build around (LaMarcus, Nicolas, Wesley) and I think four first rounders would have been attractive to teams who are rebuilding (or close to).

Wes and Nic are both high quality complementary players. LaMarcus needs a legit second option.

FIFY.

Wallace is a fine player and a guy that I really like ... but Wallace (whom I really like) probably peaked two or three years ago. Given his style of play and number of years he's been in the league, he's a pretty old 29 and guys like him don't age gracefully -- when the wheels come off they come off quickly. I don't say this to be provocative or to piss people off, but four picks right now is probably as rich as the offers are going to get and it's usually better to "sell" a year too early than a year too late.

Four late firsts is not a rich offer. Like at all.

Just wait until we are midway through this season. I expect Wallace to prove just how valuable he is. Maybe I will replace Wallace with Roy on the above poll. Gotta replace Roy. Go still has a chance. Oh btw platypus I think we may sit court side! I WORK OUT!

What team rebuilding NOW or the next year is going to value something like a 2016 or 2018 draft pick? By then, they'll be on another rebuild. If it was for 4 picks in THIS draft, sure, you do that, because those have immediate value. 14, 16, 18? We move Wallace for "rebuilding/tooling/whatever" pieces, and then flip those to get, what, a younger Wallace? So what we'd want is a star type, or someone who might be able to, and that team is going to give him up for a pick 6 years from now. I guess. I don't see that as a strong possibility. If they're rebuilding now, they're likely to want to keep their young star or potential star. I think Wallace would hold more value combined to add a player because of his salary, something likehim and Felton for rondo(generic example, not going with plausability) rather than turning him into years off picks, in the hope that years off picks get us what we want.

Buchanan: Blazers not involved in any Nets-Howard deal

Portland Trail Blazer acting general manager Chad Buchanan said Tuesday afternoon his team has not been involved in any trade discussions involving the Nets acquiring Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic.

Portland was rumored just a few days ago to be a third party in a deal that would have netted the Trail Blazers multiple first-round draft picks in exchange for Gerald Wallace.

But Buchanan said the Blazers are not looking to do anything with anyone right now.

"Absolutely not," Buchanan said. "No. We haven't had any discussions with anybody. We like our team. We like the makeup and chemistry of our group and we're very comfortable with where we're at.

"We haven't had any discussions for quite some time now."

If approached, would he listen?

"You're always going to listen if it's an opportunity to make our team better but we're not making any calls to anybody. We like this group -- the chemistry and cohesion we have right now. We have no desire to change it up.

"Obviously we'll listen if teams contact us but we haven't had any calls."

Anyone that thinks we should deal Wallace needs to take it back now. If he wasn't in this game, we lose.

You nailed that one.

He's one of my favorite players, and I love having him on the team, but I'd still deal him for the right price.... just not for some lame draft picks.

Well that goes for any player

But for picks? In 2014 and 2016?

That's a Rich Cho loser special move

Agreed.

He is by far our 2nd best player. To trade him to make way for a roleplayer (Batum) is ridiculous.

And not to knock Batum, but he isn't performing as great as I thought he would. I couldn't imagine winning the sac game without Wallace on the floor.

He's just increasing his trade value. I hope he keeps it up!

That's because people have been overvaluing Batum for three years now.

Batum should play more than Wesley, that's for sure.

Wesley stinks right now

Thanks for bumping this. I wonder if any if you who supported this deal have changed your mind? I was dead set against it the first time I heard it. It's one of those deals that you might convince yourself are good during the offseason, but once the season starts, you want Gerald Wallace on your team.

We'd probably be 0-2 without him. He's a big difference maker!
