Totally agree here, our education system is fucked and needs an overhaul on what we are teaching. Most European countires require their students to learn at least two other languages, we should be doing the same. Kids learn this stuff fast. We should also be prioritizing personal finance, money managment, health, and nutrition. Birth control and realisitic drug education should be included in health. Increasing our physical education requirments wouldn't hurt either.

I'd start by having school districts hire teachers that fit in with the makeup of the population. 85% speak spanish? How about 85% of the teachers speak spanish, and 85% of the classrooms teach in spanish.

English should be taught. As a 2nd language. I took spanish and then french as 2nd language back in the 1960s and 1970s - I think we have the technology.

I also think high schools should teach two tracks - one for kids who want to go to college, and one that's skills oriented (shop, mechanics, home economics, etc.) for those who don't.

I only say they were trash because they were the lower dregs of their own countries. Its not like regular middle and upper class people are hopping the border, they are low skilled, uneducated workforce. I've dealt a lot with the upper class in Mexico and they absolutely loathe the lower classes of society ,the types that do go illegal. They really have no opportunity so they come here and become our problem instead of theirs. we're basically the receptacle for what they don't want in shitty borderline 3rd world countries.

Philippines is good source for mass healthcare workers, nurses, etc. Cutting the H1B Visas for tech workers because of the backlash against the highly skilled foreigners was dumb as fuck.

Everyone compares current immigrants with those from the turn of the 20th century. They couldn't be more different. The untold story of the immigration wave from Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Italy was how many of those that couldn't make it here went back home. Why? We didn't have public assistance. In West Seattle, there are families living in attics paying the same amount in cash as they would for a 2Br apt, but can't b/c they're not documented. Women are raped and don't report it b/c they don't want to "out" their family for being illegals.
