As a whole, Latin America's per capita homicide rate is 23.4 per 100,000 people, nearly double the rate in Africa, which is sometimes mistakenly believed to be the most violent continent. Venezuela is the only country in the region with a consistently rising homicide rate since 1994, the report said.

I stand by it. Crimes against children are epidemic in nearly all major US cities, most large cities in the developed world for that matter. Not so much in South America, where the violence is mainly drug cartels killing each other and rebels killing soldiers and soldiers killing rebels. As for "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", those words were a desperately amoral plea for a massive influx of slave labor and future military conscripts.

It worked like a charm, and we found out that tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free aren't such a good thing. They're a fucking drain on the entire country they reside in.
