Playing at Estadio Azteca in a WC qualifier is an almost impossible win for the US.

I'd be thrilled with a draw.

Beasley with a yellow card in the 7th minute. Ugh

Only the 2nd draw ever for the US in a WC qualifier for the US in Mexico.

Zero wins, ever, other than a friendly last year.

Huge result!!!

really got lucky with the no call on edu penalty..man that was a stupid challenge. take hte point tho

Definitely should have been a PK.

Whatever, though. The yellow cards early in the match against the US were bogus, too. Mexico was diving a lot, and it came back to bite them in extra time.

yeah the yellow cards were bogus. so was the first pk claim when chicarito was pushed off the ball, never a penalty in my book

There is a gif out there of the play. He gets the ball, but yeah, it was pretty dumb and I think if the player didn't flail like a fish out of water the ref would have called it.

anyone from Portland on Team USA? Fuck Landon Donovan!

So, essentially, the draw is a win tonight?

Yeah. In all qualifiers they are 68-1-6 (or 7, not sure if that stat was from before tonight). 7500 feet, smog, the best team historically in our region and fans who throw bags of piss and vomit on opposing players. Its the best home field advantage in sports.

Don't forget how their fans point lasers in the opposing keeper's eyes. Tim Howard's face looked like a target last August during that friendly.

it is mexico, the country where you wipe your ass and put the toilet paper in a trash can next to you.

No. Although Right Back Ryan Miller had one call up to the US national team, but didn't play. Sal Zizzo played for the US in the under 20 World Cup.

The Timbers do have two players who've been playing for Jamaica in recent qualifiers, Ryan Johnson and Donovan Ricketts, as well as several players with national team experience.

mobi fehr played on a youth team too

14 conrer kicks. Mexico dominated that match. Take the point and run . . . but Mexico is a better team.

All valid points, but I don't think the gap is all that wide. The biggest revelation of this game (even if we had lost) is that we may have found our CB pairing for the future. Gonzalez was immense (I think he got caught out once, but that was out wide) and Besler was really impressive given it was his 2nd or 3rd cap. Add Fabian on the left and Chandler on the right, our back line looks solid in defense and dangerous going forward.

In the middle, replace Edu with Jones and we have a strong CM pairing. Danny Williams is another good option as a defensive center mid (but hopefully never out wide). On the wings we have some good options in addition to those who played last night. Brek Shea, Donovan (if he ever comes back), Beasely (maybe), Josh Gatt and Diskerud.

Up top we have Altidore (I think having better Fullbacks and wingers will lead to better service which he hasn't had in over a year), Boyd, EJ (though I don't rate him) plus some I'm forgetting.

In addition to all of that, we have some younger and injured players who could turn out as important pieces in the next year or two. Holden is just getting back to playing after 1.5 years off, Pelosi at Liverpool was showing progress w/ their youth team and was on the Europa League roster before breaking his leg, some guy name Gyau is supposed to be a good winger prospect and then everyone's favorite Adu may finally have found a club in Brazil. I still have my hopes that he can be our Dos Santos (brilliant for the Nats, but a horribly disappointing club career).

With all that said, Mexico has one of the best youth teams (U17 and U21 I think) in the world right now so we'll probably be 2nd best in Concacaf for some time.

had to DVR the match so was on media blackout. I was completely shocked by the lack of any Presence in Mexico's Central Midfield. Bradley seemed to have Acres of Space at times in there. And everything from Mexico was down either wing, and then cross it, and hope Hernandez gets a touch on it.

Mexico also seems to lack mental toughness. They could have gotten a PK on the Edu challenge (I'm not counting that soft fall by Hernandez (F*** you Pea)) and Mexico seemed more concerned with screaming at the ref that trying to capitalize on one of their 6,456 chances they had. When 7 or so of them basically sprinted to go scream at the ref at the final whistle, you could tell they couldnt handle adversity, and pressure. Total meltdown by their players in the end.

A tie! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I just dont get it. Why play a game if it can end in a tie. What's the point?!?!?

Yeah, the first was nothing. The 2nd PK shout I think would have been given if the player didn't have seizure on his way down.

There were acres of space I think for 2 reasons. The Mexicans were concerned with Altidore and Dempsey. Even though Jozy hasn't scored for us in ages, he has close to 25 goals this year in Holland and needs to be well marked. Dempsey is our best offensive player, so the reason they'd be concerned with him are obvious. The other reason was they were going all out down the wings. Their offensive plan was to attack our FBs, which was our weakest point last night (given the fact that our 2 or 4 best options were out its understandable). That left all of that space for Bradley. As good as he has become, I don't think he is the best at exploiting that and linking up with our forwards. That's one area where we miss Donovan I think.

But at the end of the day a point in Azteca is a great result. Oh, and lost in all my ramblings in this thread was Guzan. I knew he was pretty good, but was a little worried with Howard going down. I think we are in about as good of shape as possible with those 2.

Points are totaled up (Just like wins and losses) and that counts towards standings.

Also in Soccer you only have 3 Substitutions for a total of 11 people playing. That means 8 people will play the whole game and cant be subbed in and out like in Basketball or Football to get a breather then come back in. Imagine a Basketball game where you had to play the whole game with no breather (and no commercial breaks and constant time outs) and it went into Double OT. You would have tons more injuries, and really awful play.

(Also Ties dont happen in Cup matches that need a winner to advance, and in playoffs where someone has to advance etc)
