USA Basketball invites Roy, Aldridge and Oden to train for Team USA

Oden will respectfully decline so he can attend Dental College this summer at Ohio State.

Honk! Honk!

Roy is a lock for a roster spot if he wants it. He's the quintessential player they are looking for.

Maybe. Who would you drop off the current roster at his position? Certainly not Kobe or D-Wade. Maybe Michael Redd, but then you'd lose the best shooter on the team.

I think his prospects are good, but I wouldn't call it a lock.

Kidd could probably be left off. Guessing he wouldn't mind either, but with two good PGs in Paul and Deron, don't really need him.

Jason Kidd, Redd, maybe Deron Williams. Roy is better than all of them.

He has a passion for Dentistry... good for him.

HONK HONK!

The noise you make when you look down and take a nice couple squeezes of your man breast? :)

Any extra work for Greg would be gravy.

Roy deserves it and Aldridge is up and coming. Very cool to see 3 Blazers invited.

Aldridge seems like a perfect fit for international basketball. He makes more sense than Boozer does. Can't see Oden being agreat choice for them, but am glad he will get to work out against all of them. Roy seems to fit perfectly. Should remove Kobe, and replace him with Brandon.

I don't think Kobe Bryant will play next time around. Lots of miles on that body, he'll be mid-30s, and he was dominant in the last Olympics.

Not just yet.. They wont just get rid of the leader and catalyst for the team.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see who else wants to bow out of this. Seems like there's a natural cycle to this.
1. Big surge of enthusiasm as all the elite players want to be there.
2. They win it all.
3. Interest slowly languishes.
4. We eventually get badly embarrassed.
5. Repeat cycle.

I think we're at stage 3 now. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out guys like Wade and LeBron have had their fill and "want to clear the way for the next group." Seems like only a few people carry over from one Olympics team to the next.

Could be fun seeing Roy going against Rudy some day in the Olympics.

From 2004 to 2008, the only guys to appear in both Olympics were LeBron, Wade and Anthony.

And those guys played pretty minor roles on that 2004 team. You know, because they had to make minutes for Iverson, Richard Jefferson and Stephon Marbury.

Man, was that a cluster fuck team or what.

Larry the Clown.

I'm guessing James will be on the 2012 team because it will be "his team" then. Wade? 50/50 I'd guess. He plays a lot of minutes and takes more physical abuse than anyone since Allen Iverson in his prime. If Roy stays healthy, he will be on the 2012 team. LMA, probably not, and Oden is a complete unknown at this point. He could be dominant by 2012 or he could be an afterthought. I frankly have no idea right now about the guy.

Funny how Lebron said he wouldn't participate if Kidd wasn't on the team. Chances are Kidd convinced him not head down that road.

sure, this past season. Does Kidd really want to play in the Olympics 4 years from now? Better yet, will Team USA wan thim on the team 4 years from now? Will he be playing in the NBA 4 years from now?

Does anyone know if these practices or scrimmages are open to the public?

Here's an old article by Alex Boeder that gives an overview of what the Olympic team will probably look like.

Remember this guy wrote it before this season, so he's not a complete idiot for not automatically including Roy.

Of note, Bayless fans. This gentleman seemed to think Bayless had an outside shot at getting looked at when he entered the league.

Can anyone find anything on the 2012 team other than the Oregonlive article? Seriously, the Oregonian isn't the type of paper that has exclusive breaking news :press:

Roy shot a higher 3pt% last year. Redd is just not all-nba material anymore.

What an honor for these guys! Very cool!

I hope Roy and Oden both turn them down. I'm a big believer in getting plenty of rest during the summer. The regular season and playoffs take alot out of you. One of the reasons why the Spurs never won back to back titles was because they were too tired the next season and needed a catch to re-group. Roy expends alot of energy during the season and Oden needs to rest, especially since he had micro-fracture. Aldridge is a gazelle, so I don't have an issue with him. I just want whats best for the Blazer team, that's all.

All 3 would seem to be great fits..when playing the olympics, minutes are limited b/c the rotations are so deep. Really no more energy expended than playing pickup ball or working out.

Almost everyone who participated in Team USA became better players. They get top-flight coaching outside of their normal usual universe and play a new brand of basketball. I'd love to see three Blazers on the team.

Yeah, LaMarcus would be in heaven just throwing up jumpers all day. It'd be cool to see LA and Roy in there, while Greg probably isn't ready for that yet at this point in his career. But to train with the USA team? Hell yeah, go do that G.O.! Learn how to prepare yourself from the best.

The funny thing is I get the impression that Roy is indifferent to being on the team and that he would prefer to rest than play...that Aldridge really wants to be on the team but is probably not good\ready enough to make the final squad and that Greg is not really interested at all.....

It will be interesting to see what happens.....
