OT Vacation Plans? (1 Viewer)

So…..I was hoping to take the wife to Victoria next late month, but with all the hoops still needed to jump through to get across the border (and my wife’s general ambivalence about traveling in general) it looks like I’m going to head off on a 7-9 day road trip to Colorado and back by myself (most likely). In all my travels, I’ve only really been to CO at Four Corners, and twenty feet of CO doesn’t exactly give one a feel for the place.

I hate interstates and hope to take a lot of secondary roads. But to get through Southern Idaho (some of the ugliest country in America) ASAP, I have no choice but to take I-80 into Wyoming until cutting south into north central CO. But the options are pretty much endless. I have every intention of avoiding Denver (or merely passing through it at worst). I may even go as far as going as into Nebraska and dropping into Kansas before looping back, dropping down and heading back west via Pueblo to Grand Junction. Or just bang around the western half of CO. I’m still trying to figure it out.

If anyone has any suggestions of places to visit (that don’t include Denver) I’m all ears. I like the smaller towns and slower pace. And my itinerary (with one exception) is pretty wide open. The only hard and fast part of the trip is returning via “The Loneliest Road In America” across Nevada. So, if anyone has any suggestions of places to check out (which can include SW Nebraska or NW Kansas) please feel free to share. I would really appreciate it.

I've spent a lot of time at some family friend's place in Colorado Springs. Great scenery and plenty to do outside if you are into that. I also spent 4 days broken down in the tiny town of Flagler. I would not recommend that.

Some nice places back East include Niagra Falls, New York City and the Capitol building. When visiting the Capitol try taking the commuter train from one of the Senate office buildings to the Capitol, that's when I ran into Senator Robert Byrd. Mid way to the Capitol there is a cafeteria that serves awful food. The best I could see was the hamburger. And they recycle nothing.

I can recommend Mo's Discount Likker Barn in Buena Vista, CO.

If I were you I'd skip ID and the freeways and head south into NV, then across the middle of UT. Can't go wrong with UT.

I’m doing the Utah thing on the way back. Thought I’d do a dive bar tour across it. Should be a fast trip……..

I like deserted Eastern Oregon. Ever been to Dufur? It's a hoppin' town. Lot's to do if you like watching traffic hustle by. They say there's a different car going by every fifteen minutes.

I haven’t been to Dufur since I was an 18 year old long hair. It was not a pleasant experience for all the usual reasons of the day. I have looked at passing through there on the way home though. But I’ve also pondered stabbing myself in the eye with a screwdriver……..and have yet to follow through……..

My sister lives near Dufur. Her step-grandson, who attended Dufur High School, won a lawsuit against a female teacher who had sexually molested him. Talk about the news of the town for a long, long time.

My father drowned on a fishing accident near Dufur at Shearer's bridge in 1968. I was in Vietnam at the time. My younger brother was with my father and witnessed the whole tragic event.

Wow, Lanny...so sorry to hear that. That must have been terrible. Particularly since you were around the world at the time.

My sis lives on Fifteeen Mile Rd. in The Dalles.
 
My great aunt lived in Dufur most of her adult life, I haven't been through there since her funeral but I just remember they had a big ass house with an awesome basement. Between there and Burns (where another great aunt lived) it was two places that the world seems to have passed by.

Are they that similar? I've never been to or through Dufur (that I'm aware of), but I have been to Mosier several times. Nice little place. I just imagined they were a bit different based on Mosier being closer to the Columbia, Dufur further South/inland.

The guy that used to sit next to me at Blazer games was a car dealer and started giving his tickets to anyone who bought a new car from him in the Dalles.
I briefly had an encounter with another guy who was a pre med student from the Dalles who cheated with my ex wife before she was my ex. I still remember the son of a bitch's first name, Claire.
 
No idea how we pulled it off, but Iceland/Italy/Greece/Netherlands, 6 flights, in 18 days. No flights cancelled/delayed and no positive covid tests. phew
 
Thinking for Honeymoon next May to do Asia instead of Europe. May go to Phillipines to go to Boracay, just to get some tropical shit. 2 days in Manila, meet up with fam for a meal or whatever.

Then maybe a few days in Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore

Wanna stay here




Who the fuck knows what will be open though
