Going to spend a big chunk of the summer in Hawaii. Might be a pain with work, but I expect to go 2-3 times, 3 weeks or so each time.

We’ll definitely go to the Oregon Coast for a long weekend and up to Mt. Hood 2-3 times as well.

Friends just came back not too long ago and loved it. Said the flight out and back everyone had a wristband showing COVID tests and had the island basically to themselves during the week. Weekends were not crazy. Not sure if it picks up this summer.

Rental cars in Hawaii are all kinds of fucked right now. I got my resevations in, but I don't know if they'll cancel them before I get there or if they run out of cars.

We just closed on a house on the Big Island (Hilo side). It was the most crowded I’ve ever seen the Big Island. I’ve been back for 10 days, my wife just got back. Said it slowed down some after I left. The rental car (and uHaul) situation is a complete nightmare, though it’s starting to ease up a bit.

Have not been to the Big Island for 20 years but hear it has gotten busier. Going to Air BnB the house when not there?

What area did you buy in? My wife and I are looking pretty seriously for a condo or maybe a house on the Big Island.

Nah. Ideally, I will spend a 3 months or so combined through the course of the year, the wife maybe 4-5 months. And then friends, families, acquaintances, etc. can use for a small fee. We're not in love with the idea of complete random folks staying in our house. We might put it on the website that folks put on a website and trade time at the house (no money is exchanged). Still don't love that, but there's a better level of accountability.

It's a Volcano address, but closer to Mountain View. It's 15 minutes to the entrance of Volcanoes National Park, 18 minutes to Hilo. We looked at a couple of condos on the Kona side, but we have two kids, and having a place where we can have our kids and guests.... that wasn't going to work with the Kona side. We have a solid sized yard, 2-car garage, 3-bed/3-bath. Honestly, the sunny side that is Kona is amazing for vacation trips, but for long-term, I can't take that much sun and heat. We tend to stay on our side during the week, then trek to the Kona side for a beach day on the weekend. We've already found some amazing snorkel spots on the Hilo side (honestly, one is the best spot we've found on the entire Big Island).

Awesome...I lived in Volcano and later in Paradise Park near Mt View....before that when I was single back in the day I lived in Papaikou right on the cliffs....our son was born in Hilo hospital ...I used to teach in Keaau and in Hilo...great memories ...great place....I like the Hilo side of the island best ...too much vog in Kona...Captain's Cook Bay near South Point is a great snorkeling spot....beautiful reef there....we may buy a place around Hilo when our grandson is a bit older.

Nice. You plan on moving there, or just a winter get away?

My only concern about that side of the island is that Mauna Loa’s about due for an eruption.

Our current plan is about a month in December/January, and maybe two months of the summer, like June/July and August/September. Kids’ school schedules play into as do other work events. Eventually, we’d like to spend half the year there, but that’s probably a 5-10 years out.

Is Uncle Robert’s still going after the eruption and Covid? That place used to be a kick.

It's still there. I was told to go visit, but we were so busy getting things setup, we didn't have time to check it out. We want to go see it next time.

We're in Lava Zone 3, by the way. We basically pay the normal home insurance rates that you'd pay here (something like $600/year for this house). Something like only 1-5% of lava zone 3 has been impacted by active lava since 1800.

I'm at the airport now. Heading to Charleston SC to see my sister's family for awhile. Two observations. The new E wing is really nice, and 75% of the travelers are all seniors.

I’ve been working on the road for over a week. Wyoming> Salt Lake> Vegas> San Diego> LA> Sacramento> Reno> Salt Lake again, now headed back home.

Road Warrior, I was too. Traveled 70% for most my career.

Interesting, except for Hilo Hattie's I liked the Kona coast best.

Heading back to the Midwest next week. Thought the rental car mess was just Hawaii. Would probably have been cheaper to Uber everywhere as opposed to renting. Thankfully have relatives that are loaning me a vehicle.

Why is there a rental car shortage in Hawaii? It's not like people can drive them one-way to other states...

With few travelers, the rental car companies were selling off a lot of their fleet.

Demand returned with the return of travel, which occurred faster than agencies could build back inventory.

Ah, thanks much for the explanation, now I get it.

I live only a few exits away and went once. No poker room, lots of overpriced food, and games that will eat your money. Once COVID-19 is over, I would watch an act there.

Ive gone twice. Once in awhile I’ll get an itch to throw some hard earned money away. I haven’t won shit. A friend won 8 grand on a slot machine there. Who knows if he spent 10 grand to win the 8k. No one will ever know.

My 95 year old grandma plays video poker at several dive bars around North Portland and says she does good

When my wife and I went to the big island we had plenty of different cars to choose from from the rental agencies. Can's say about Oahu but a shortage there would make no sense. Maybe Lanai or Kauai.
