Kahului (airport city) has the Safeway, as well as a Costco. Buying groceries and eating in is definitely a way to go, but half the fun of vacationing is checking out some local fare. Fat Daddy's Barbecue is in Kihei and is worth the effort.
If you're looking for activities in Maui, I highly recommend doing the bike ride down Haleakala. Very low effort (all downhill), very fun experience. If your bike tour stops in Makawao, get some poke from the Rodeo General Store. Also, if you take the road to Hana, stop at Uncle Harry's for "Mama's malasadas"--best I've ever had (yes, better than Leonards for those to whom that means anything).
Checking out all of your stuff and taking notes!
It appears that Mama's malasadas' are now sold out of Uncle Harry's Marketplace. I couldn't find a stand alone brick & mortar for her biz.
I think I'll reserve a bike ride for us down Haleakala with this group:

Thanks again!
