Two superstars on the downside of their career rented to the Blazers in a fire sale in an attempt to put the team over the hump in the West race. If anything, it will give ABC/ESPN something other than Brandon Roy to put as the face of the team (coming up next, Kobe and the Lakers take on Vinsanity and the Portland Trail Blazers!).

I'm not in love with this trade. I'd much prefer Gerald Wallace or Caron Butler.

Pippen had 6 rings and was one of the 50 greatest of alltime. He was a defensive stalwart, a total complete player.

However, he was on the downside by the time he got here. Still, at 75% he was damn good.

Carter right now is way better than Pippen when he joined the Blazers.

Pippen didn't have near the annoying fanbase that Carter does.

He's a better scorer for sure (than Pip was in '99)

But the intangables Pippen brought. He hit clutch shots, was a leader . . . I loved the guy. He almost took us to the promised land. I will always remember his competative fire.

I bet we'd get even more sweet MaxaMillion youtube videos out of it though.

Hmm. This trade would change this board more than any other trade. Vince has a whole lot of fans.

Lol at Carter better than Pippin right now. I much rather have Pippin than Carter man. He's a monster who never lost his love for the game. He's the ultimate point-forward. Carter on the Blazers wouldn't be bad. He'd get a lot more minutes than I think a lot of people expect. He can score 20 easily and is a good vet presence.

I wonder how MAXMILLION feels about this possibility?!

oops...that was a slow post :dunno:

Not way better, but better. Vince right now is a star, Pippen at that time was a veteran role player.

Yea, there is a difference. I think though, Carter could be a very good player for Portland.

Wow. I'd love to add the 1999 Pippen to this Portland team. Or, even better, the 1990 Pippen.

Pippen's defense was absolutely superb. Carter will be a better scorer, anything else?

*crickets*

Like I said, Scottie was a veteran role player. He couldn't take over games at that syage of his career. He may be a better fit for Portland, but Vince is a better player during this time then he was during that time. btw, Vince is a good passer too. One of the most underrated aspects of his game.

Interesting comparison. Pippen was more of a floor and locker room leader than Vince is. But with Roy being our leader, I guess we wouldnt need Vince to play that role.

Pippen was the beginning of the end for our consecutive playoff appearances record.

His ego destroyed the team's chemistry and handcuffed the coaches.

Please let us learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.

Anyone know of a link for tonight's game?

Justin.tv does not appear to have the game tonight?

?

Many thanks from British Columbia (former PDX'er)

Pippen was 34. He was on the verge of falling apart, physically. After the 50 game, shortened season, he played in all 82 with Portland. Then he missed about 20 games each of the next three years.

His production dropped, too.

Year Tm PER
1996-97 CHI 21.3
1997-98 CHI 20.4
1998-99 HOU 16.8
1999-00 POR 16.4
2000-01 POR 15.3
2001-02 POR 14.9
2002-03 POR 15.3

These numbers didn't capture his defense, and he was able to run the offense better than any other Blazers PG at the time... but the slide is pretty clear.

Carter's PER is 20.6, after 18.8 last year (Pippen had 20.4 and 21.3, respectively, at the same age).

I don't think it's unfair to say that, right now, Carter is better than Pippe was when the Blazers acquired him.

I agree, say no to Scotty for RLEC. VC on the other hand would be sweet!

Anyone who says pippen was a declining role player when he came to Portland, go back and watch some of those games. I watched a few of the playoff games the year he came a few months ago and had completely forgotten how freaking good he was. He made our team.

This is true. Pippen would solve our need for a PG and SF in one fell swoop. You can't say that about a whole lot of players.

You said it yourself, PER doesn't mention defense, and Pippens defense was top notch.

Pippen won games 5 and 6 of the 2000 WCF damn near by himself. One of the reasons for the Game 7 Choke was that Scottie had nothing left in the tank for the stretch run.

Actually, I was thinking it reminded me of Adrian Dantley trade to the Pistons. He was 30-32 (86-89) when he was with the Pistons. Won a ring with them. Got traded to Dallas in the Mark Aguirre trade.
