Lakers coach Phil Jackson was critical of Vince Carter as the Nets struggled down the stretch of last season, and now the swingman has fired back, according to Telegraph.

"I care nothing about Phil Jackson and what he says. He's entitled to his opinion. It means nothing, it's just a coach feeling that he can say what he wants to say, and that's fine," Carter said. "His opinion means nothing to me. Maybe it made him feel good saying it, but that's it."

Carter averaged 21.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game for the 34-48 Nets.

"I've been in this league 10 years now, seen it all, been expected to do this, not expected to do that," Vince added. "But it's really about my team and what we need to do and it's about me focusing on what I need to do.

"I don't get into reading the papers and what people feel that they think I should do, that's just a matter of opinion. I sit down with the coaching staff and we talk about what they expect of me each and every year - and outside of that, it's just gibberish."

Did Phil make his comments last season or recently?

If he made them last season then Vince is a moron for just now talking about it. He wasn't on team USA, his team hasn't made any big moves, so now he needs something to talk about so he brings up old crap?

here is the jist of it

not wise of vince to comment on this. not wise to say you dont care what a 9 time championship coach thinks. not gonna help you win arguments about vince wanting to be a winner if he doesnt care what the best coach in the league thinks...even if what he thinks is off base. hopefully next time he will say "no comment...i dont care about that stuff".

I dunno, PJax does like to talk smack, and take jabs at people. I wouldn't trust what he has to say, unless it's in the Lakers locker room to his own guys. I mean I think it is best for Vince to not care and ignore it. It would be completely different though if Phil was his coach and was trying to help him out and Vince didn't care about what he had to say.

Is it me or this is OLD news? ...i read those quotes from Vince about Phil like last season....regarding the same topic.....i dont think this is new news.

Wow, that's some of the harshest words I've seen Vince speak out.

Can't agree with what Phil is saying though. He said Kidd had fire, and Jefferson was playing great. It couldn't be farther from the truth. Plus, Vince was injured.

thats the thing. most fans just look at a stat sheet and watch sports-center highlights and then make a decision about vince and make these crazy statements.

for those who watched him, you would see its a combination of BAD PLAY, yes, he wasnt playing that great, but a role change, a teammate who wants to be traded, a busted ankle....a lot of stuff played part. it wasnt as clear cut as what phil leads people to believe.

This guarantees that Rosen is going to rip Vince a new asshole in forthcoming article

Wonder why Vince didn't comment on the 'fool's gold' statement from the Orlando contingency.

So, you have no clue.

No, that comment was taken out of context hence there was nothing for him to comment upon.

Knowing that this has been explained and discussed in excruciating detail in this forum, it is beating a dead horse to bring it up again.

There are plenty of reasons to bang on Vince, but this isn't one of them

Honestly, that was not meant as Vince-bashing, but as an honest question.

Geez, Fool's Gold? I would think that Vince would be insulted by that statement.

I would assume a reporter asked him about it. I doubt he just brought it up and started commenting.

Seems like Vince never was asked about them before and now a reporter asks and he responds and somehow looks bad for replying in a mature statment.

The title overrates what he says.

I dont see anything wrong with Phil Jackson's comments. It was true. Like Million said, VC should have just said no comment.

At the beginning of the year Kidd was playing his heart out. Jefferson was being RJ. VC, injured or not, was statis quo. Your Reputation precedes you. Oh Well. VC needs to come out and prove everyone wrong. VC nneds to lead this team to the Lottery. Please.

are you a Nets fan? Do you watch any games?

People cant say these are just numbers. The guy busted his ass in Nov. especially with the rbs. I cant imagine Kidd dogging it with those numbers. Yeah the 3pt and TO sucked but he still contributed.

Is it just me or did Phil Jackson seem to have more fun last year than other years?

From getting into a shouting match with D'Antoni, to making fun of Andrew Bynum, to giving those between-quarter interviews. Something's different.

Maybe I don't pay attention much to Phil Jackson.

Yes, I've actually watched almost all Nets games from the past few season and it was quite obvious Jason Kidd wasn't playing with "heart." The guy certainly wasn't dogging it, but his heart wasn't in it for the right reason. It was so obvious Kidd was just going out there to get his triple doubles to boost his trade value so he could get traded. Anybody that watched Kidd prior to last season knew how Jason really played and while he was still obtaining his numbers, he wasn't playing the way he usually does.

And as far as your other comment, about RJ being RJ, even that is false. The RJ we saw last season wasn't the same RJ from every other year he played on the Nets. The guy had one mission and that was to score, and he was so concerned about his scoring that he forgot how to defend and how to rebound.

I somewhat agree with you on the RJ statement. I dont blame him for trying to improve his game. He has done so every year in the league. That mission wasnt only an RJ mission, that was a NETS mission. The lack of scoring was a team problem the year before. The team had to addressed it. RJ wanted the ball more. Which I admire. Did he do it for personal reasons? Maybe. Unfortunately, RJ increased his scoring but neglected his defense. I can see RJ getting back to form on the defense. As far as the rebounding, for too many seasons the Nets had depended on the 1,2, and 3 to do heavy rebounding. I was all for Boone, Swill and any other big to pick up that slack.

As far as kidd, I blame him to a certain extent too. That first month Kidd played with some passion. I remember a game where he was pumped his fist and showed passion. Whether it was contract issues and/or other issues, the same way Carter lost motivation to continue playing in Toronto the same thing happened with kidd here.

I recognize that you think Vince is a dog. What I want to know, though, is whether you will acknowledge it if he plays well this season, and where the bar is set.

I have acknowledged in the past when I thought Vince was playing well and playing team ball, and playing as though he cared, and I will continue to do so.

But understand that the bar is not set at stats.

exactly. which it's why it's great to see him helping out the rookies in the summer league, touring Europe and speaking about how excited he is about the upcomming season, and how he looks forward to being a leader.
