Rio Grande Valley Vipers General Manager Gianluca Pascucci today announced that the team has acquired guard Maalik Wayns. This will be Wayns' second stint with the RGV Vipers.
Last season, Wayns (6-2, 185, Villanova) averaged 12.4 ppg and 3 apg in nine appearances with the Vipers. He scored a season-high 24 points on Jan. 23, 2013 against the Texas Legends. On March 9, 2013, Wayns received a GATORADE Call-Up from the Los Angeles Clippers.
As a member of the Clippers, Wayns appeared in six games during the 2012-13 season, averaging 3.3 points, and appeared in two games this season before being waived by the Clippers on Jan. 16. Wayns also played for the Clippers during the 2013 NBA Summer League.
Undrafted out of Villanova in 2012, Wayns signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent in July 2012 and a 10-day contract in January 2013.
Wayns played three seasons at Villanova (2009-12). During his junior season, he ranked seventh in the nation in free throw accuracy (.892), and led the Wildcats in scoring (17.6 ppg), assists (4.6 apg) and minutes played (33.6 mpg).
