The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (5-0) topped the Delaware 87ers (0-3) 153-109 tonight at State Farm Arena. RGV connected on 23 three-point shots, just one three-pointer short of the NBA Development League record they set Monday night against the Texas Legends.
Nine Vipers scored in double figures and were led by Isaiah Canaan with 29 points, 7 assists. James Johnson scored 23 points, 10 rebounds, followed by Troy Daniels with 18 points. B.J. Young added 15 points, and Tim Ohlbrecht tallied a double-double 13 points, 12 rebounds.
Mfon Udofia led the 87ers with 22 points. Reeves Nelson, Darin Mency and Aquille Carr each scored 15 points. Nelson also added 12 rebounds. Dustin Salisbery recorded 12 points.
Delaware put the first four points on the board with two free throws by Udofia and a hook shot from Reggie Johnson. However, RGV responded with three shots from behind the arc to take a 9-6 lead. The game tied four times during the first quarter, but RGV connected on 10 three-point shots to hold a 38-30 advantage heading into the second quarter.
With 9:55 left in the first half, a three-point shot from Mency cut Delaware's deficit to 42-41.Talton responded with a three for RGV. The 87ers continued to fight for the lead. At the 7:51 mark, Udofia sank a shot to put the Sevens back within one point, 52-51. Daniels answered with a 24' three-pointer to give the Vipers the 55-51 lead. RGV held a 77-70 lead at the half.
The Vipers started the second half with a 21-3 run that gave RGV a 98-73 lead midway through the third quarter and they never looked back. RGV won 153-109.
Thursday, Dec. 5 the Vipers will host their annual Kids Day game versus the Delaware 87ers at 11 a.m. (CT). Then, RGV hits the road to take on the Iowa Energy Sunday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. (CT).
