<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TheBlackMamba:</div><div class="quote_post">Questions for you.
I'm a big fan of you, your posts, and your taste in music.
Because of you I got into the RHCP about 2 months ago, I'm addicted. I can't take them off my iPod playlist. I just bought the live DVD, it's incredible.
Just a few questions...
1) Your top 10 guitarists?
2) Do you think Frusciante looks like Jesus? That's besides the point, what are some good songs by him?
3) Your top 10 CURRENT bands?
4) Top 10 RHCP songs?
5) Top 10 guitar rifts?</div>
Thanks a lot for the compliments bro'. I'm sorry for not responding to that PM you sent me a few days ago, but I've been pretty busy preparing to go to U of M for the semester, so I haven't been able to get on JBB for more than a few minutes at a time.
1) Hmm... this really has nothing to do with skill, because some of the most talented guitar players out there I find unlistenable, but here are ten I listen to the most (can't really list them in order of how I like them tbh) -
Syd Barrett (Pink Floyd)
Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
John Frusciante (RHCP/Ataxia/Solo)
George Harrison (The Beatles)
Jimi Hendrix (a.k.a. the greatest to ever live)
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Alvin Lee (Ten Years After)
Francis Rossi (Status Quo)
Steve Vai (Solo)
Jack White (The Raconteurs/The White Stripes) - A bit overrated as far as talent goes, but I like his stuff.
2) Yes, eerily. And some good songs are -
"Second Walk" - I think you'll probably like this song if you like the Chilis. It's the song of his that sounds the most like them.
"This Cold" - Another song that sounds similar to something he'd do with the Peppers.
"Away and Anywhere" - Probably my personal favorite of his, but not a very 'radio friendly' song.
"Going Inside" - The intro makes the song really. This was his first single as a solo artist.
"Poppy Man" - Instrumental only, but a great song that'll get stuck in your head easily.
"In Relief" - Most people just getting into him can't stand this sort of material, including myself when I first got into him, but even if you don't like the song as a whole, the intro is pretty cool.
Just a warning about Frusciante... I wouldn't go out and buy one of his albums just because he's in the Peppers. I made that mistake when I was first getting into them, and he really sounds nothing like them whatsoever. He also has a bunch of albums from the period where he had quit the band and was addicted to heroin that are almost unlistenable, even for fans of his stuff. He doesn't really have one single, great solo album that'll probably appeal to an RHCP fan, but he does have a lot of individual tracks that are pretty solid.
3) 'CURRENT' meaning bands still around? Wow, this is a tough one, because the music industry is such **** these days, but off the top of my head -
10 - Kings of Leon
9 - The Redwalls
8 - West Indian Girl
7 - Wolfmother
6 - The Raconteurs/The White Stripes
5 - The Strokes
4 - John Frusciante/Ataxia
3 - Pearl Jam
2 - Incubus
1 - Red Hot Chili Peppers
I'm not a huge fan of any of them in particular except for the top four, but they've all got songs on my playlist right now.
4) This list changes almost monthly because they've got so much material out there (in fact, just a few months ago "Around the World" was my favorite), but here's what it'd have to be at the moment.
10 - "Rivers of Avalon"/"Quixoticelixer" - I list these together even though they're two separate tracks because they're both tracks that no one has ever heard of because they were never released on albums, which is a damn shame, because they're two of the greatest songs I've heard from RHCP.
9 - "Pretty Little Ditty" - An instrumental track... part of which was ripped off by Crazytown to make "Butterfly". The song's bass line sounds simple, but it was one of the first ones I learned (probably why I like the song so much), and it's actually one of Flea's most challenging.
8 - "Midnight" - This used to be my favorite song, but I think I just overplayed it. It's still got a special place with me though... "Over the laws of light, Over the moon by midnight"...
7 - "Breaking The Girl" - I think what really draws me to this track are all of the unusual instruments they use on the track, especially the percussion instruments, which Chad Smith took mostly from a junkyard. It just combines a lot of sounds you wouldn't expect to hear in a Chili Peppers song (at least an early Chili Peppers song).
6 - "American Ghost Dance" - The oldest song of theirs I have on this list, but it gives you a great feel in general of what their old funk-rock style used to be like... very, very funky track done with George Clinton as producer.
5 - "Nobody Weird Like Me" - One of the best older tracks, just full of energy. It has a great outro too.
4 - "Stone Cold Bush" - A real departure from the recent stuff, but as far as their classic material (a.k.a. their harder/funkier stuff) goes, this is my favorite at the moment.
3 - "Scar Tissue - Another song that's been played a million times but is brilliant none the less.
2 - "This Is The Place" - I know a lot of people who say this is the worst song on
By The Way, but from the first time I listened to the album until the present, this has always been the standout track to me... especially the background vocals on the track.
1 - "Californication" - Everyone knows this song, and it's been played on the radio a million times, but it's still possibly the greatest song I've ever heard... just brilliant on all levels.
5) I'm listing these in order of my personal tastes, not really how hard or complex they are -
10) Black Sabbath - "Iron Man"
9) Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
8) Guns N' Roses - "Sweet Child O' Mine"
7) John Frusciante - "Going Inside"
6) Smashing Pumpkins - "Today"
5) Jimi Hendrix - "Purple Haze"
4) Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"
3) Jimi Hendrix - "Fire"
2) Derek and the Dominoes - "Layla"
1) Jimi Hendrix - "Voodoo Chile"
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Why don't you just PM him?</div>
To be fair, he did, but I never got back to him because I've been really busy lately.
BTW, Matt, Live In Hyde Park is okay... probably not worth buying though... just d/l'ing. I ordered it just because RHCP hadn't put anything new out in a long time when it was released, but I think Live at Slane Castle is better... it has more soul, and there's no video to go along with Hyde Park either.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The whole world must know, that's why. Everyone loves Voodoo Child. Including me.
By the way, since most of the questions are RHCP related, can anyone recommend any bands with a similar sound to them?</div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Because Voodoo's a pretty popular character on the site, that's why I don't PM him.
I'm sure I'm not the only person on here that are interested in his answers.</div>
Thanks man. I really enjoy reading your posts, always good stuff... reminds me of ShadyRecords... that guy was the ****...
Seriously though, you change your name more than Nick Mockford changes his sexual orientation...
By the way, I'm happy to answer all Chili related questions. And I'm really open to comments/discussion about my lists. A good music convo/debate would be awesome...
