In this episode of Triggernometry, Elica Le Bon discusses the current geopolitical situation in Iran and her perspective on the necessary steps toward regime change.
Key Discussion Points:
The Case for Regime Change: Elica argues that the current war is not enough on its own to dismantle the Iranian regime. She proposes that effective change requires a three-pronged approach: the external pressure of war, organized uprisings (which she notes are often supported by the Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi), and large-scale defections from within the regime's ranks (0:32 - 0:52, 4:59 - 6:46).
Ideology and Moral Inversion: A significant portion of the conversation focuses on how ideological movements, specifically those rooted in Marxist or Islamist frameworks, create what she describes as a "moral inversion." She discusses how these ideologies can lead people—including those in the West—to support authoritarian regimes while claiming to be anti-oppression (11:45 - 12:20, 44:09 - 44:48, 1:03:01 - 1:04:49).
The Role of Information and Propaganda: Elica highlights the dangers of "ideological subversion," where bad-faith actors exploit periods of vulnerability (like wars) to radicalize public opinion. She shares personal experiences regarding threats she has received and discusses how misinformation is used to manipulate narratives on social media (50:04 - 52:16, 1:08:02 - 1:09:32).
Critique of Western Response: The hosts and Elica debate the lack of a clear, unified strategy from Western governments. They express concern that without a coherent plan, current actions may inadvertently leave the regime in power while causing significant hardship for the Iranian people (4:34 - 4:47, 19:40 - 20:28).
Social Dynamics: The conversation touches on René Girard’s scapegoat theory and how modern political polarization in the West mirrors some of the destructive tribalism seen in authoritarian nations (58:33 - 1:00:46).
Regime change isn't going to happen. Their regime has gotten worse from an American perspective. Stronger. Iran is winning.
Iran will now push hard fore nukes. As will all similar countries after tge way Ukraine and Iran have taken the shaft by trusting nuclear powers.
Iran now has a more hard-line and younger leader. Iran leadership now has more support from the population.
Everything about this has gotten worse from an American perspective. Exactly like we said it would.
Israel has proven to be aa fascist expansionist rougue state as many claimed. They have proven to be a destabilizing force in the Middle East and the rest of the world. Much like Russia. And the Israeli population is supporting it. Supporting these crazy military abuses with 90% approval according to some polls.
The one saving grace for the US is how unpopular this war is and how much it's hurting Trump and Republicans politically in the US.
The only hope is that the US supports legitimate well intentioned and logical leadership and makes a 180.
The US needs progressive populism. We need actual free press. Expanded NPR with funding to support responsible journalism throughout the country. We need the right to universal education through PhD/Master Tradesman. We need Medicare For All (with all medical decisions made between the patient and their chosen licensed primary care physician and based on medical data). We need a social safety net that guarantees a floor on how far a person can fall (which eliminates homelessness. Eliminates the loss of a person's last home). We need to eliminate the financial cliffs in the social safety net that prevent people from advancing out of the system.
We need fiscal and environmental accountability and responsibility from our corporations, wealthy, and government (including the military).
And we need to codify these changes into the constitution as rights for the people.
In my view, if we make these changes the population will be far less likely to be uneducated and desperate enough to fall for another fascist snake oil salesman like Trump.
People would be free to take greater risks and start more businesses. And people who start businesses that fail will be able to start again more quickly and apply the lessons they've learned, without having to worry about covering employee healthcare, etc.
These changes would grow our economy incredibly quickly and make us much more resistant to recessions, as consumer confidence would always be propped up by the guarantee of a higher floor.
We (NATO) must no longer support countries who behave like Israel. They need cut off until Bibi and his cabinet (and any warhawks) are removed from power and face war crimes and Israel commits to a return to democracy and peaceful relations with their neighbors.
We should help fund and rebuild Gaza for Palestinians. NATO should fund and run schools, healthcare, and public works including helping to build an economic engine until the population of Gaza can begin taking over and can be self governed democratically.
This will take a generation or two. But we owe it to them.
We must get back to using soft power and economic advancement as incentive for cooperation and peace.
We should also make sure we have a military strong enough to back this up and keep authoritarian and fascist governments at bay. Our investment in our population, education, and R&D will help make this possible.
