Rep. Michael Waltz: Iran has 'a long history of marching right up to the edge and then eventually backing down'

House Armed Services Committee member Michael Waltz, R-Fla., said Tuesday that he believes President Trump will respond to any U.S. casualties at the hands of Iran in a similar way to former President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

"I think this is going to be very similar to ... Operation Praying Mantis in the late 1980s, where Iran struck and almost sank one of our frigates. Our response -- the Reagan administration's response -- was to sink half of their Navy," Waltz said on "Special Report" in response to breaking reports that Iran had fired missiles at bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq.

Operation Praying Mantis came in response to Iranian mines nearly sinking the U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts, a frigate that had been chaperoning Kuwaiti oil tankers through the Persian Gulf. The ship had to be towed to shore in the United Arab Emirates after a mine blew a hole in its hull.

The U.S. Navy responded by bombing and sinking several Iranian military vessels and other targets.

"And beyond there, Iran didn't respond again," said Waltz, who added that Iran's government ultimately does not want a full-scale war with the U.S. because it could lead to the fall of the hard-line Islamic regime.

"They have a long history of marching right up to the edge and then eventually backing down and surviving to spread its malfeasance another day," he said.

Waltz, a retired Green Beret, said Tuesday's events remind him of Iran's recent attack on the Saudi Arabian oil entity Aramco.

"[That attack was] very sophisticated [and] surprised a lot of Iran-watchers and analysts," he said. "You had effective coordination between unmanned drones and surface-to-surface cruise missiles on the part of Iran which was a pretty sophisticated capability. It doesn't surprise me these were falling on Iraq because with the militias that [Qasem] Soleimani until a few days ago commanded, they would have effective reconnaissance to be able to dial these missiles in."

None of these are serious threats to Americans, but Iran has been killing American civilians for over 40 years, mostly without cost.

They just bombed Iraq, a close ally of ours.

When international sanctions interrupted their ability to slaughter women and children, Obama gave them $150,000,000,000 to jump-start their terror again. He hired an international hitman to kill Americans and their allies.

That is Obama's legacy.

The Iraqi PM (who we installed) said it himself. He was supposed to be at the meeting. On a side note, he and his constituents also voted 170-0 for the United States to get the fuck out of their country.

They probably didn’t mention that on the TV either.

Aids ebola and hurricanes are so different from unnecessary wars that even I can't take you seriously.

If you have to watch Fox, watch Tucker instead of Hannity (he's Bizarro Maddow) and vice versa.

With Iran a few months away from having a nuke, expect their nuke facilities to be taken out completely. Without electricity, the regime will meet the same fate as Muammar Mohammed Abu Minyar Gaddafi.

I doubt any American troops will be needed in Iran. We will simply accelerate the sanctions, destroy their military and intelligence capabilities, and go after their military leaders directly to limit civilian and soldier deaths.

I’m all for leaving the region and let the tribes deal with each other.
The Iraqi Pm and all his constituents are Radical Shia that murder their own.
Another reason I want us out of the Mid East.
I just wish the average Iranian citizen was equipped to challenge the Mullahs but they know they will be murdered because they can’t defend themselves or have the means to revolt.
So it comes down to those with the guns and power to surprise the people.
No way you can change the mentality of that region.

The only issue with leaving is Russia will take control of the region. Not that Trump hasn't already handed control to them anyway.

Aids ebola and hurricanes are all created by man to kill minorities and gays, and to make money, according to Dems. No different than wars for profit.

I don't watch much of either. Or much of any other commentators anywhere. Talking heads all have agendas and take forever to get to the point, a point I usually have issues with.

I read the news, everywhere it is printed, apply it to what I know from my experience and my knowledge of history, and take into account who owns each news outlet.

A clear picture of the truth usually rises in the process.

I don't see us getting bogged down any more than we are already (Thanks Obama/Kerry).

I do see Iranian revolutionaries finishing off the ailing regime, now that Trump's Real Sanctions have them on the precipice and after we cripple their ability to intimidate their populace and their neighbors.

As long as we have troops there we are targets from Radical Islamist. They want us dead. It’s a religious war for them that they’ve been fighting for centuries.
I’m a libertarian that opposes war and nation building. Not opposed to defending ourselves however. My youngest son 30 years old is in that region for who knows how long and I Don’t like him being there, but I support them as they are Americans men and women, civilized and contributors to our society.

Good. Maybe China can fight them for it.

Maybe if we weren't spending 50000 trillion dollars a day on endless wars we could do something else with the money.

Let Russia go bankrupt and have their soldier's junk blown off.

I hope you are right!
I can’t stand the thought of a religious theocracy controlling the people at any cost.
Hell, I’d be in favor of leaving the Mid East all together but leave enough guns for the Iranian people to use to protect themselves and/or over throw the regions radical zealots. They will need them.
