Was "The Wizard of Oz" a top 10 movie of all time?

I say yes for a number of reasons. It's stood the test of time. It was breakthrough as a color film. Judy Garland was ideal for her part, and a great singer. The music is still great today - listen to Iz' version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow... The special effects were superb, as well, and really stand out in color.

It's a 70+ year old movie, and still widely appreciated.

Some good points made... it DOES transcend generations. It is timeless, in many ways (probably because of the fantastical nature of Oz, and the relatively little "real world" time in the movie).

Also, the use of color is probably underestimated by those of us who take it for granted today. To have seen movies in black and white exclusively, and then to see Oz explode into color... it must have been spectacular. I think that some 3D movies have tried (like the Tron sequel) to have that "wow" moment, but the improvement to color is way better than to HD or to 3D.

And the music? It's fantastic. I still find myself humming songs from the Wizard of Oz after not seeing it for years and years.

I don't have a top 10 list of movies (actually, I guess I do, although I didn't take that list altogether seriously...) but I think Wizard of Oz is fantastic.

And I agree on the Wizard of Oz. Great movie. It also inspired the movie and Broadway play "The Wiz".

Absolutely it is. One of the most influential and well known films of all time. The characters, the music, the story, and the atmosphere all great. Like people have said transcends generation.

This one is a given, the Wizard of Oz is easily a top 10 film.

fabulous shoes

and i might just be stoned, but i remember watching it when i was younger and thinking then that it was one of the first movies id seen that had that kinda ambiguous ending, like was it all just really a dream? head wound? or did it really happen.....

For some viewers it was their first talkie, since sound movies were only a few years old. For at least half the viewers it was their first color movie.

Oz and Fantasia were considered the greatest movies by acid-takers in the 70s.

I watched the whole 2 hours. Bill Still did the talking and wrote and produced it.

"Every dollar we have in circulation is created as an interest-bearing debt. So what is the national debt? When government spends more than it collects in taxes, it has to borrow the difference by selling interest-bearing IOUs such as US bonds. When a US bank buys a $100 US bond it gets to loan out 10 times thant amount. So the bank not only gets back the $100 plus interest from the Federal government, it gets to loan out another $1000 it doesn't have, and charge additional interest. Banks are allowed to create this extra money out of thin air."

He says that money is created only by private banks at interest to the U.S. government. Instead, the government should control money creation, so that it can happen without creating interest. Don't let the gold standard return, since it favors bank owners. Most of the 2 hours concerns the history of how banks have lobbied for this system in the last 200 years.

If we were on the gold standard, nobody could make money out of thin air. If the price of gold is $42/ounce, then the government could only print 42 $1 bills per ounce of gold, period.
