Count me as being a huge Chauncey skeptic, particularly after the abysmal pre-season, but I think it was just that he wasn't suited to our personnel. Now he's got a bunch of young scrappers, he's a much more suitable coach. Ball movement, running, constant effort on defense - fun!

I just assumed his coaching style would match his playing style. Everyone could see our personnel was ill-suited to that style.

yeah he mentioned I think yesterday that you can’t really win these days with the playing style of the pistons back in the day, but at the same time he still believes in similar type of players; dogs. He mentioned Milwaukee and Phoenix as examples but I think Memphis is another team like that.

Now we just need a Ben Wallace on this team. Maybe a Tayshaun Prince out ball hawking the perimeter.

I think Chauncey probably learned a lot from Larry Brown who was one of the best defensive guru’s.

Chauncey is a cool headed dude.
He is amazingly confident in himself, and once he gets his type of guys (which he now is!) I think that confidence will be justified.
It seems we aren't too far away from iso ball and bad defense being in the rear view mirror.
And replaced with some barking dawgs who just wanna hoop.
Right, Dame????

Very fun to watch the team playing so well (though I wish we were losing close games!). Not surprising to see the style of play improve with the roster change, but it has been surprising to see the results. Curious if Billups is more of a McMillan type who is better with young improving rosters or if he can grow with a talented vet roster.

Hope not because Thibs rides his dudes into the ground.

“Dame? Oh you’re playing 42 minutes every night. Have fun!”

Hence the "more player friendly" lol.

I merely meant the hard nosed defensive-centric type style.

I basically took a week off from everything basketball because I was so upset about the first trade. Now that I have a cooler head…

If this is how we’re building the team, I’m fine with it. Build a defensive team around Dame and Simons and develop everyone around them into shooters. So far…

Dame
Simons/Hart/Johnson

Those are your guards. If you’re in a position to get Ivey, he would be perfect to round out our guard rotation. Ivey and Hart are both scrappy defenders. Hopefully we get to see Johnson in a string of games to see where he’s at before he rides the bench next season.

Nassir worries me as a starting forward. Right now, I see him being a souped up version of Iggy in GS. We need to address the two starting forward spots. I’m INCREDIBLY disappointed we weren’t able to get Murphy from NOP. Eason is a real scrappy forward that I’d like if we didn’t can’t get one of the big 3 PFs.

Nurkic at C doesn’t bother me if he can stay healthy. Ultimately, I’m liking the direction of the team. I can always applaud effort.

Yeah.
Waaaay too many in here had the wrong reaction to what Joe is doing.
I saw immediately that he was replacing prima donnas with dawgs.
This will improve this team.
Hell, already has.

there is some hope

but it's not like Billups invented the concept of combining offensive motion with aggressive man defense. That's how the Spurs won 5 championships, the Warriors 3, and Suns have the best record this season after making the finals last season. There is a big gulf between the Blazers copying that style and having the talent to optimize that style like those other teams. Baby steps I guess

You know the obvious player who doesn't fit with this style?

Dame.
Yep, that thought keeps popping up in my mind. and perhaps our best team to trade Dame to for nice pieces has now traded those pieces to the Nets for Harden

Dame will play the way Dame does. He will slow it down and he will pick n roll. He will ISO when he needs to because he can. Every team needs that player. Second unit will run.
The one thing i am not worried about is Damian Lillard. This team will again have the chance to make shots when teams try to shut Dame down. That will be what happen if this team ever makes the playoffs. Right now people are watching middle of the season games being played by players with absolutely no pressure on them whatsoever.
As soon as the lights get a little brighter and the speed of the game becomes playoff tempo we will see if this team can compete. That might happen sooner than we realize if they are trying to get into the playin.

Going to be extremely tough finish to rest of the year especially the next 10 games. We’re bound to have some rough nights but What I want to see is relentless commitment on defensive side of ball maybe get into the top 20 on defense to finish the season. I want to see what Hart and Justice bring to team. And most importantly I wasn’t to see Simons continue to take the big shots and be aggressive doing it, I hope teams throw everything they can at him so gives him even more experience. This final run is when teams buckle down so it’s going to be playoff type basketball for teams that need wins.

The team reminds me a bit of the Doc Rivers '99-'00 Orlando team with Darrell Armstrong. That team ended up just missing the playoffs when it was predicted to have the worst record in the league. We won't do that well (or close) but just saying the hustle is there. (Related: the 2000 draft was shitty, but they got Mike Miller at #5 who won ROY.)

Next 5 games are brutally hard, just winning one would be an accomplishment - @ MIL @MEM GSW DEN @PHX

But then the final 20 games of the season look like the easiest schedule of any team in the league. If the guys hustle and buy into Chauncey style I wouldn't be shocked if we make a run for the playin. Right now we are in the 10th spot. 20 games is a very small size, certainly possible for the team to end up around .500 record. Plus a lot of our opponents are teams fighting for the playin, 2 games against New Orleans, 3 against San Antonio. So a win could count as a win for us and loss for them, basically a double win. We might be able to squeak into that 10th spot with below .500 play the rest of the way.

If we lose a bunch and fail at the above at least we get our lottery pick. If we somehow win a bunch of these, make a run at the playin, it would be fun. We'd get to see the young guys play well, give Ant Hart Nurk postseason style high pressure game experience, leave the door open for Dame to return in the playoffs, and possibly clear up the pick we owe Chicago so we'd have no future pick trade restrictions.

Look at this breakdown of the opponents we have to finish the last 20 games of the season:

7 games WAS IND DET HOU HOU OKC OKC - against tanking teams, we might even be more talented
5 games SAS NOP SAS SAS NOP - against fellow playin competition

4 games MIN MIN ATL NYK - against flawed playin teams
3 games BRK DAL UTH - when good opponents might suck, Brookyln has lost 11 straight, Dallas and Utah are the last two games of the year so they may have nothing to play for

1 game out of 20 that is against a legit playoff opponent, at Utah March 9th

Your posting style matches your playing style and I don’t like it!!

So you're contending that even though with 20 games left we will most likely be 15 games below .500, 14 if we're lucky that we will have a good shot at ending up at .500? You think this team is going to win at .750 over 20 games? Look back three games in the schedule and see who we lost to. We will drop most of the games against your so called "flawed playin teams", we will likely drop all of the games against the teams you designated as "good opponents that might suck" and we're going to drop games to those "tanking teams" too... just watch, it will happen. Also, you list the Wizards as a tanking team despite the fact that they're a half a game out of the play in and three games better than us.

The fact is that the next twelve games are against teams that have better records than we do and even though there are so many in here that for some reason think this is the best roster we've had all season, it's not. People are basing that off of two games against teams that pissed away big leads against us and should have beaten us. I love the effort and hustle I'm seeing, I would love to see us win every game for the rest of the season because I actually think that having all of our future picks available to trade is more valuable than where we are likely to end up in the lottery should we miss the playoffs and retain our picks. Us making the playoffs and getting all of our future picks back just isn't going to happen though.

So after we drop almost all of the next 12 games and we're more than 20 games below .500, it would probably behoove us to rest our vets and get Ant run with guys like Keon, CJ, Trendon, GB3, Hughes, Dido, DSJ and even Keljin. We get to evaluate these guys to see who we want to move forward with and at that point we also get to drop games because at that point that should be the goal of everyone in the organization above Chauncey. The guys from Chauncey on down through Keljin should be concentrated on developing players, the system and competing in the games but orders should be coming down from above to keep our vets out of the games "so they can stay healthy".
