Because it's easy to pick the part where we played best on a weaker schedule and stretch it out in a way to claim that we'd win at the same pace.

The team can't contend as currently constructed. We need to sign an upgrade at Center while we have cap space, as that may be what we need to contend.

We're not going to add a "name." We're not adding anything at all. We have had cap space for a year and have not used it. That cap space represents a player, a very good player. We're MISSING a player, and have been. However, if all goes well, the situation will be rectified in short order.

Even more than a player, we appear to be trying to add a skill set, namely rim protection. We may have been good, and may even be getting better, but that doesn't mean that there aren't deficits to correct.

So? We didn't win 55, we won 44. But even if we did, so did OKC. GSW won 73 and SAS won 67.

So no, the guys we have aren't good enough. We want to be at least a top 4 team in the West, preferably top 2. No way do GSW and SAS combine for 140 wins next season. Which means the 3rd and 4th seeds will probably have better records than they did this year. In other words, 55 wins might not even be enough for HCA in the West next season.

We need to add at least one, preferably two significant pieces, while we have the cap flexibility to do so. We need better defense all the way around. The three best teams in the league last year all played elite level defense. We did not - not even close. We need improved interior defense, improved perimeter defense and a reliable 3rd scorer. It would be really nice if one of the players we sign in free agency, or acquire though a lopsided trade, meet two of those three needs. We need more two way players who are above average at both ends of the court. Lillard and McCollum are great offensive players, but weak defensively. We need to surround them with solid defenders that are also respectable scoring threats.

Yes, our young guys still have room to grow and improve. So do everyone else's. Treading water is no way to get ahead. We have the means and opportunity to improve our roster and I'm sure our GM and owner will do everything in their power to make sure that happens.

The problem is he's locked in at $12 - $15 million a year for the next three years. not unreasonable by today's standards, but how do we absorb that, and possibly Pek's contract and still have enough to get Whiteside?

It all depends on which stats you look at. basketball-reference lists his DBPM as -0.3. For comparison, James Harden has a DBPM of -0.4. Beverly isn't a horrible defender, but not nearly as good as his reputation.

He has finally developed a decent shot, but he's still a horrible distributor. Our startng center had an AST% almost as high as HOU's starting PG.

Serious question: Does DBPM reflect the fact Beverly always guarded the other team's best guard, while Harden was hidden on the opposing team's best player? I certainly think this matters.

I agree if we just brought back the existing team we would probably win 4-6 more games next season just from pure gelling and development. But that's not to say it wouldn't make us a much better team to add Howard or Whiteside.
