Portland Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews suffered a left torn Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season, a league source told Yahoo Sports.

The loss of Matthews is a devastating blow for the Blazers' hopes of challenging for a Western Conference title, as well as a significant personal hurdle for Matthews. He's set to become a free agent this summer and expected to command a significant deal.

Matthews was injured in the third quarter of Thursday night's victory over Dallas in the Moda Center. Matthews crumpled to the floor upon making a move to the basket. He had a streak of 250 consecutive games played end on Dec. 10, 2012, only to start a second streak of 142 games that will end now.

In the best season of his career, Matthews was averaging 16 points and making nearly 40 percent of his 3-pointers. He is one of the NBA's best 3-point shooters.

The Blazers' trade deadline deal for Arron Afflalo will give them an experienced shooting guard to move into the starting lineup. C.J. McCollum will likely play a more significant role off Portland's bench.

This sucks. I wanted to see the Rain Broz beat the Splash Brothers in the playoffs. Afflalo is a very very good player though. We can survive this. Caron Butler was Dallas' second best player in 2010-11 and he got hurt but Dallas still won the title. We can still do this.

So devastating. He was our third best player. If everyone else plays great can we still contend? I don't know.... but I'm sure we now have zero margin for additional injuries. We will need our bench to provide some minutes in the playoffs. Can CJ or Gee provide anything in the playoffs? I have doubts. I guess its damn lucky the one position we had a starting quality player was shooting guard. This just sucks so much.
